Ayendy Bonifacio is a Dominican-American writer and educator.[1] Born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic and raised in Brooklyn, NY, his work touches on topics like immigration, the Latinx experience, socioeconomic/class and higher-education intricacies, and diasporic identities. Interviewed by The Ohio State University, his alma mater, Bonifacio writes that “As immigrants, we may share similar struggles with learning a new language, culture and space, but how we navigate these struggles or interpret them are unique to each individual.”[2] His memoir, Dique Dominican (Floricanto Press, 2017) is the story of his immigration to New York City and his coming-of-age in the 1990s and early 2000s.[3] Author Ana Castillo argues that "By giving his life meaning, Dique Dominican encourages overlapping communities to join in and also lift their voices high. These times demand such acts of courage and skill." Critic Ilan Stavans calls it "A courageous, Babel-like journey![4] It was named one of the "Top Ten Best Non-Fiction Books for 2017" by The Latino Author.[5] In addition to writing creative nonfiction and poetry,[6] Ayendy is pursuing a PhD in English at The Ohio State University. He lives in Boston with his wife and partner, Joey S.
