The area of the district is {{convert|1856.1|km2|sp=us}}.{{citation needed|date=December 2012}} Its administrative center is the urban locality (an urban-type settlement) of Yuzhno-Kurilsk,[1] located on the Kunashir Island. Population: {{ru-census|p2010=9,501|p2002=9,727|p1989=13,597}} The population of Yuzhno-Kurilsk accounts for 61.4% of the district's total population. Dispute with Japan{{Main|Kuril Islands dispute}}The district in its entirety (along with the island of Iturup) is claimed by Japan.
