Barbara A. Nadel, FAIA is an architect who is an advocate for security and design excellence in civic architecture and the built environment,[1] and has worked on secure designs for the State Department and other entities. She is the principal and founder of Barbara Nadel Architect (BNA), a New York City architectural and consulting firm.[2]

Education

She graduated from Binghamton University (State University of New York) with a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Architecture. She then studied at Cornell University School of Architecture, but her Cornell adviser discouraged her because as a woman, he claimed I was likely to drop out if I transferred. She then went back to for Binghamton and created a Pre-Architecture major. After graduating from Binghamton, she attended to Rhode Island School of Design, where she received Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture degrees[3] She studied architecture at Cornell University, physics at Hofstra University, and management at the University of Rhode Island.[4][5]


Early Life

After graduating from RISD she worked in-house at the Veterans Administration Medical Center Engineering Department in Providence, RI. She thought about pursuing an MBA and took a Business Management class at University of Rhode Island. She obtained a position at Keyes Associates, an E/A firm in Providence, and worked on hospitals, psychiatric facilities, a prison and women’s shelter. She then moved back to New York.[3]

Advocacy

Ms. Nadel testified before the U.S. Congress, House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Subcommittee on Public Buildings about federal security standards, and briefed the House High-Performance Congressional Caucus Coalition on secure and sustainable U.S. Embassies. The White House and First Lady appointed Ms. Nadel as an expert security panelist for the Preserve America Summit. She collaborated with the U.S. Dept. of Defense, Federal agencies,  public officials, and preservation leaders to identify security strategies for historic properties. [1]

Positions Held

U.S. General Services Administration appointed Ms. Nadel to the Green Building Advisory Committee, as the private security security expert, and to the National Register of Peer Professionals in the Design Excellence Program, where she contributes to the quality of American civic architecture. [1] She chaired the AIA New York Chapter Health Facilities Committee for over 10 years, moved up to the AIA New York State Board of Directors, and was elected AIA New York Regional Director on the AIA National Board of Directors. She was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2000, elected 2001 AIA National Vice President, and served again as AIA NY Regional Director in 2003.

In the mid-1990s, she chaired the first AIA-AAJ special needs conference, and then served as 2002 the AIA-AAJ chair.

In 2008, she was appointed to represent AIA at the State Department’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Industry Advisory Panel.[3]

She formed her architectural firm in 1992.[3] Prior to establishing BNA, Ms. Nadel worked for several large, international architectural and engineering firms in New York City, Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. She is a licensed archtiect in New York State. BNA is a New York State certified Woman Owned Business Enterprise (WBE). Then she worked for leading U.S. architecture/engineering firms (HLW, Perkins+Will, Cannon/NYC, HOK, and Karlsberger (6) editor of the AIA knowledge-driven Web site previously known as Soloso (6) AIA President Marshall Purnell, FAIA, appointed Nadel as the AIA representative to the U.S. Department of State Overseas Building Operations Industry Advisory Panel for embassy design. In 2006, First Lady Laura Bush and the White House appointed Nadel to represent the AIA at the Preserve America Summit’s Addressing Security panel with the U.S. Department of Defense, the AIA Historic Resources Committee, federal officials, national security, and preservation leaders.(6)

Ms. Nadel has written more than 450 articles on security, design, sustainability, public policy, and technology, appearing in over 100 magazines, newspapers, and web publications. She has contributed to several books, including Government By Example (Kyoto Publishing/Deloitte, 2010), Architectural Graphic Standards (Wiley, 2007), Architecture: Celebrating the Past (Kaplan, 2007), Livability 101 (AIA, 2005), and Time Saver Standards (McGraw-Hill, 2001).She has been featured in over 250 global media outlets, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Fox News[1][4]{{AFC submission|t||ts=20190327002146|u=Kaeschwal|ns=118|demo=}}
