释义

Barbara Greene (1907-1991) is the author of [https://www.librarything.com/work/563400/workdetails Too Lake to Turn Back] (published in 1938 as Land Benighted[1]), detailed her 1935 travel in west Africa[2] with her more famous cousin Graham Greene. Granham Greene's book Journey Without Maps is his account of the same adventure, published in 1936.

Barbara Greene was born on September 28th, 1907 at São Paulo, Brazil, where her father, Edward Greene[3][4], Graham Greene's uncle, became wealthy in the coffee trade. In 1910, Edward moved back to England with his German wife Eva and children, and settled in Berkhamsted close to his brother Charles. The family's first languages are German and Portuguese. Barbara is the 4th of six children.

Graham Greene had tried to find a companion for this first trip outside of Europe for some time to no avail, largely because his plan involved an ambitious route through hinterland of Liberia, one of the darker corners of Africa at the time. In October 1934, at the wedding of Hugh, his younger brother, Graham invited Barbara, three years his junior, to join him. They both admitted afterwards that the champagne consumed at the reception played a part in that agreement. The trip involved a ~250 mile journey by rail and road across Sierra Leone, followed by a trek of ~350 miles through Liberia and Guinea, with a team of 24 porters, three servants and a cook. It nearly costed Graham Greene his life. After crossing into Liberia and beginning the trek, Graham was struck down by fever, dangerously ill. In contrast, Barbara seems to have thrived in the jungle, and kept a diary. Later when her father was ill, she read

In 1937 she went to Germany for the first time and met the German diplomat Rudolf Graf Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche und Camminetz, son of Hermann Graf Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche und Camminetz and Emma Freiin von Landsberg-Velen. On March 27th 1943, she married Rudolf Graf Strachwitz at Ober-Glasersdorf, in Silesia, Germany. During the war, she was trapped in Berlin working as a maid, while Rudolf was stationed in Budapest. They have two children: Rupert Graf Strachwitz (born April 30th 1947) and Helene Gräfin Strachwitz (born June 2nd 1951).

After the war, Barbara Greene published a book on Liechtenstein (1947) and a collection of prayers of all religions. The family moved to Argentina where Rudolf served as professor of economic policy at the University of Mendoza. Helene was born there. In 1952, Rudolf rejoined Foreign Office and served as ambassador to Italy, and the family moved to Rome. After the death of her husband, Barbara lived in Munich and on the island of Gozo in Malta, where she founded a relief organization for the disabled. She died in 1991 in Starnberg near Munich.

In 2007, Barbara Greene's son, Rupert Graf Strachwitz, as well as Graham Greene's daughter Caroline Bourget appeared at The Graham Greene Festival in Berkhamsted[5].
