She is currently the director of engineering for the Dublin branch of the company HubSpot. She has 20 years of experience leading large software development operations. She is also known for being an advocate for diversity within the fields of engineering and technology. EducationMcCarthy went to secondary school in a convent school in the west of Ireland. She was one of the first female students to take Higher Level Physics for the Leaving Certificate in that school. She then attended the National College of Ireland Galway (NUIG). There she attained a BA degree (honors) in Economics and Applied Maths and a Masters degree (honors) in Information Technology. She was one of only three women in her graduating class. CareerIn 2016 McCarthy was appointed Director of Engineering at HubSpot. HubSpot provides marketing, sales and services software for businesses. McCarthy’s job at HubSpot entails overseeing HubSpot’s growing Dublin engineering team. She, together with her team develops the company’s core products like its new email tool and mobile application. The team size as of 2018 is 80 people. McCarthy chooses members of the team for their specialised skills including UX researchers, machine learning infrastructure engineers and product designers. Advocate for Diversity in the Technology and Engineering SectorMcCarthy is an active advocate for diversity in her field. She has written articles for Silicon Republic about the issue including “Superheroes in the making: Why we need to slash tech stereotypes” [1]and “5 lessons I’ve learned about hiring and growing diverse teams”. [2]McCarthy believes that the first step to getting women more interested in engineering is for them to be able to “see themselves in the role” [1]of an engineer and thinks that having more women in the higher up positions in the engineering world would help achieve this . She believes that having more diversity in general is important as “diversity of thought”, [2]results in more successful engineering teams.
