She was one of the first woman faculty members at Saint Anselm College, where she taught in the Department of Biology from 1954 until her death. She took a one-year leave of absence in 1963 in order to pursue graduate studies at Harvard with Professor Alfred Romer. She returned to teaching in the fall of 1964 while simultaneously working on her dissertation, for which she was awarded a PhD in 1965[2]. Dr. Stahl's research focused on holocephalan fishes, the group containing the living chimaeras and their extinct relatives. Among her notable publications on this group is Volume 4 of the Handbook of Paleoichthyology (Chondrichthyes III-Holocephali)[3]. In recognition of her work on these fishes, the Eocene chimaeroid Callorhinchus stahli is named after her[4]. With her husband, Dr. David Stahl (1926 – 2013), she was an avid collector of art, and owned an exceptional series of early 20th century prints by Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel, Conrad Felixmüller, Ludwig Meidner, Emil Nolde, and Georges Rouault. This collection was donated to the Hood Museum of Art in 2014[5]. She was also active in supporting local educational organizations in New Hampshire, and was a co-founder and longtime board member of the Derryfield School in Manchester. 1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.anselm.edu/sites/default/files/Documents/Library/friends-news-04-04.pdf|title=friends forum: A newsletter for Friends of the Geisel Library April 2004|last=|first=|date=|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 2. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www2.biology.ualberta.ca/wilson.hp/mesofish/TCM.10.std.pdf|title=The Compleat Mesoangler: A Newsletter About Mesozoic Fishes Volume 10, Number 1, April 15, 2004|last=|first=|date=|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 3. ^{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books/about/Chondrichthyes_III.html?id=2IBOAQAAIAAJ|title=Chondrichthyes III: Holocephali|last=Stahl|first=Barbara J.|date=1999|publisher=G.
