bbb korea is a non-profit organization in Korea which provides free interpretation services from volunteer interpreters.[1] The organization was established in 2003 with the goal to create a society without language or culture barriers. It is an incorporated association of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea.[2] bbb korea is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea.

bbb stands for 'before babel brigade,' which indicates the world before the construction of the Babel Tower, when all humans shared a single language without any communication difficulties.

History

bbb korea first started as a campaign in 2002 for the FIFA World Cup and 2002 Asian Games. Lee O-young, a South Korean critic, brought up the idea of an interpretation service through phone calls during the period of 2002 FIFA World Cup. As the international event was predicted for many people from different countries to visit the country, he believed the interpretation service will become an essential.

Thus, the bbb campaign was created, aiming to help visitors communicate in Korea by providing free interpretation services. The service was facilitated by the usage of phone calls. When one calls and selects the language, bbb automatically connected the speaker to an available volunteer interpreter.

In 2003, bbb korea was established as a non-profit organization. It supported international events held in Korea ever since, such as the 2003 Daegu Summer Universiade and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. [3] [4] At the point of 2019, it is an organization with over 4,500 volunteers for 20 languages.

Programs

Language interpretation service

People who experience language difficulties can dial bbb korea to use the interpretation service without any charge. [5]

The bbb interpretation service can be used by dialing and selecting the language through an automatic response system (ARS). Then the speaker will automatically be connected to an available volunteer interpreter.

Another way is to download the bbb application on the smartphone. On the app, users are able to select the language they need and is connected to an interpreter accordingly. [6]

When the user dials bbb again in 30 minutes after the call ended, the user will be connected with the same interpreter as before.

Those who wish to volunteer to become a volunteer interpreter of bbb Korea can apply through the bbb korea website. Applicants are given situations that require a high understanding of the language as well as situational factors. After passing the language test and completing the interpretation education, the applicant can become a bbb volunteer interpreter.
