because I said I would is an American nonprofit organization that supports various public service projects and encourages people to make and keep commitments. Originbecause I said I would was founded by Ohio resident Alex Sheen after the death of his father in September 2012. The organization gets its name from the title of the eulogy Sheen gave at his father's funeral. The organization was started with the concept of 'promise cards'. These were cards on which people were to write a promise "as a tool to remember how truly important [one's] commitments are. The day before his father's funeral, Sheen created a Facebook group named 'because I said I would' and promised to send 10 promise cards to the first 100 people who gave him their address. Eventually, he decided to ship them for free to anyone who requested them.[1]Alex Sheen founded because I said I would with his coworker at Hyland Software, Amanda Messer.[1] The organization gained viral success on Reddit after an interview with the Cleveland newspaper The Plain Dealer in 2012.[2] Alex promised to sent 10 promise cards to whomever requested them, free of charge. Since then, because I said I would has sent over 10 million promise cards to people in more than 150 countries.[3] In 2013, Sheen promised to learn a new task for each of the 52 weeks of the year. He wrote down each of these promises on a promise card. In 2014, he promised to volunteer at a different nonprofit organization each week of that year.[4] The organization gained wider attention in 2013 after its project with Matthew Cordle, a 22-year-old man who contacted because I said I would through its Facebook page. In a video on the organization's YouTube channel, confessed to killing a man while driving under the influence of alcohol. Sheen says he helped Cordle make the video to raise awareness of drunk driving.[5] In 2017, the organization launched a high school chapter at Fairview High School in Fairview Park, Ohio. The program is intended at teaching students to keep their word and be better citizens.[6] As of 2018, the organization earns revenue through merchandise sales on its website and Sheen's speaking fees, which he donates in full to the organization.[1] On January 1, 2018, Sheen appeared on Today to be interviewed by Megyn Kelly about because I said I would.[7] Ongoing ProgramsPromise Cardsbecause I said I would started with the idea of 'promise cards' which are small black-and-white cards the size of a standard business card on which a person can write a promise or personal commitment.[8][1] The person then gives the card to another person who gives the card back once the original person fulfills the promise.[8] The people who request promises often send their stories to the organization, and promises range from mundane to serious.[7] Since its inception, because I said I would has sent over 10 million promise cards to more than 150 countries.[3] Sheen describes promises as easy to make at the beginning, however the initial excitement eventually fades and it is a person's character that determines whether or not a promise will be fulfilled.[4]Character Educationbecause I said I would began its 'Character Education' program in 2018. The program takes the organization's mission directly to US schools and includes a curriculum that teaches students soft skills such as honesty, self-control, and accountability.[3]References1. ^1 2 3 {{Cite journal|last=Chee|first=Gabbi|date=November 2013|title=The Everyday Action Hero|url=http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/pace/spirit_201311/index.php#/0|journal=Spirit Magazine|volume=|pages=86–98|via=Nxtbook Media}} 2. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/06/nonprofit_because_i_said_so_se.html|title=Nonprofit because I said I would sends promise cards around the world|work=cleveland.com|access-date=2018-10-18|language=en-US}} 3. ^1 2 {{Cite journal|last=Forrest|first=Jayson|date=September 2018|title=A Promise Made, A Promise Kept|url=|journal=Money & Life|volume=30|pages=16–19|via=https://fpa.com.au/about/financial-planning-magazine/}} 4. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://www.rightthisminute.com/video/rtmtv-mans-foundation-offers-volunteer-services-throughout-nation|title='Because I Said I Would' Founder Offers Volunteer Help as New Year's Resolution|website=RightThisMinute|language=en|access-date=2018-10-25|date=2015-01-06}} 5. ^{{Citation|title=DUI confession message: Don't be like me - CNN Video|url=https://www.cnn.com/videos/crime/2013/09/06/sot-lv-dui-confession-site-founder-sheen.cnn|access-date=2018-10-23}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.cleveland.com/fairview-park/index.ssf/2017/12/fairview_high_school_selected.html|title=Fairview High School selected for Because I said I would pilot program|work=cleveland.com|access-date=2018-10-23|language=en-US}} 7. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.today.com/video/promises-kept-how-one-man-s-loss-of-his-father-sparked-a-mission-to-help-others-1127196227533?v=railb&|title=Promises kept: How one man’s loss of his father sparked a mission to help others|work=TODAY.com|access-date=2018-10-23|language=en-US}} 8. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.npr.org/2013/12/30/258382696/son-offers-advice-for-keeping-promises|title=Son Offers Advice For Keeping Promises|work=NPR.org|access-date=2018-10-25|language=en}} |
