Benjamin O'Brien (born February 4, 1973) is a German-Irish physician and medical leader. He practices Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiac Anaesthesia at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, United Kingdom.

He is a Professor of Perioperative Medicine at the [https://www.qmul.ac.uk/whri/ William Harvey Research Institute], Queen Mary University of London[4] and the Clinical Director of the Department for Perioperative Medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Barts Heart Centre.

Family Life

Married to Dr. Anna Lawin-O'Brien, Consultant in Fetal and Maternal Medicine.
Two daughters (Coco and Sophie).

They live in North London.

Early years and education

Benjamin was born in Bonn, Germany, to an Irish father and a German mother. He attended the Beethoven Gymnasium in Bonn, Germany and Carlsbad High School in California, before studying medicine in Freiburg (Germany), San Francisco (USA) and Berlin (Germany). He graduated in 1999 and has since completed specialist training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in London, Sydney and Berlin.

Academic Career

O'Brien gained his doctorate in 2001 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkley, CA, USA and Albert Ludwig's University of Freiburg, Germany[5]

He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2005 and of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in 2011.

In 2012 he was awarded a Master in Health Business Administration Degree by the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.

In 2013 he completed his Habilitation at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

O'Brien a Professor of Perioperative Medicine at the [https://www.qmul.ac.uk/whri/ William Harvey Research Institute], [6] (Senior Lecturer 2011-2016, Reader 2016-2018).

His research interests include arrhythmias in critical care, applications of fluoresence in situ hybridisation, multi-omic investigation of cardiac disease and data mining in genetics and genomics, and he is the author of original articles, reviews and book chapters in these fields.[7]

O'Brien is a regular reviewer for several medical journals.

He served as a Guest Editor for a Special Edition of Current Genomics (published 2012)[8].

Leadership

Prof O'Brien was part of the leadership team that created the Barts Heart Centre in 2015, merging three previously independent cardiac centres into the U.K's biggest cardiac unit.

Prof O'Brien is the Clinical Director for Perioperative Medicine, at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and the Barts Heart Centre in London, UK, where he also practices as a clinical Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiac Anaesthesia.

Prof O'Brien is a Founding Senior Fellow of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM)

He sits on the NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) HTA Panel for

Emergency and Hospital Care (Panel B)[9]

Prof O'Brien is an elected UK representative on EACTA (European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists) Representative Council[10]

Other Interests

Ben is a keen pilot and an enthusiastic urban cyclist.
