Berj Kailian was an Armenian American artist who employed Armenian motifs and imagery in her paintings.[2] BiographyEarly lifeBerj Kailian was born in Kghi, Western Armenia in 1914. She and her mother survived the Armenian Genocide and immigrated to the United States in 1919.[2] Her sisters and brothers died in the forced marches, but Berj survived because she was tied to her mother's back.[2] Marriage and childrenBerj married Vahan Kailian, an Armenian Genocide survivor from Kharpert.[2] They had two sons, Vaughn and Gregor. Later lifeAt the age of 65, Berj Kailian continued her arts education at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She went on to graduate in 1984 with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from Tufts University. She was on the board of advisors and faculty of the South Shore Center in Cohasset and the Weymouth Arts Council, and on the board of directors of the Copley Society in Boston.[2] Philosophical and/or political viewsBerj Kailian was an advocate for local Native American issues.[2] Honours, decorations, awards and distinctionsThe Armenian State Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art in Armenia, and the Armenian Museum of America in Watertown all have Berj Kailian's paintings in their permanent collections.[2] See also
