Bernard Carabello was a resident at the Willowbrook State School on Staten Island from the ages of 3-21.[1] He is considered the father of the self-advocacy movement among people with disabilities.{{Citation needed|date=October 2018}} During his stay there he endured conditions such as having to walk around naked.[2] Physical and sexual abuse were rampant at Willowbrook, as well as being understaffed. Oftentimes children were not fed and the bathrooms were filthy.{{Citation needed|date=October 2018}} He was washed with dirty rags that were used to clean the floor.{{Citation needed|date=October 2018}} He, along with a doctor at Willowbrook and a reporter named Geraldo Rivera, revealed the conditions of Willowbrook State Institution to the world.
