}}Better Lost Than Stupid is a collaborative electronic music project comprised of Davide Squillace, Matthias Tanzmann and Martin Buttrich.[1] After signing to Skint/BMG in 2017, the trio released their debut single 'Alto' in October of that year.[2]

History

As integral members of the Circoloco family, Squillace, Tanzmann and Buttrich had often played together as solo artists, but it was a back-to-back session between the three at 2010’s Electric Zoo in New York that sparked the idea for Better Lost Than Stupid.

After a period of silence, the trio marked the official unveiling of Better Lost Than Stupid by releasing their debut single 'Alto' in October 2017, followed shortly afterwards by their sophomore single, 'Dynamite'. Squillace, Tanzmann and Buttrich then embarked on a European tour, including both numerous headline club shows and a number of one-off appearances at high-profile festivals, including Tomorrowland (festival), Ultra Music Festival, Creamfields, South West Four, Exit Festival, and Sonus.

The trio are currently in the studio working on their debut full-length album.

Davide Squillace

Main article: Davide Squillace

Born in Siena, Italy, Squillace and his family moved to Naples just after his birth.[3] In Naples he developed an interest in electronic music, thanks in part to the city's notorious local scene. In 1995 he moved to London, where he grew fascinated by the British scene and began buying his first pieces of production equipment.

During his time in London, Squillace's early productions were released on Primate Records, Audio, and Contrast. In 1999, he returned to Naples, where he began studying at the local school of sound engineering. During these years he focused jointly on his studies, and on in establishing himself as a DJ in the city's neapolitan techno clubs.[4]

In the years that followed, Davide Squillace released tracks via labels including Ovum, Sci+Tec, Morris Audio, Resopal Schallware, Supernature, CMYK, Adagio, Viva, Nervous, Saved, Shake, and Rillis; and, subsequently, these releases led to appearances at venues and festivals such as Circoloco (where he has been a resident since 2007), Coachella, Sónar, Womb, Berghain, and many more.[5] He continues to DJ around the globe, both as a solo act and as a member of Better Lost Than Stupid with Buttrich and Squillace.

Matthias Tanzmann

Born and raised in Leipzig, Germany, Matthias Tanzmann's work as a producer, DJ and label boss has helped to both define the genres he has turned his hand to and to firmly establish him as both a top-class selector, curator, and producer of ever-varied electronic music.[6]

After releasing his debut album Restless in 2008, Tanzmann turned his hand to remixing tracks by artists including Booka Shade, Moby, and Josh Wink. A number of his remixes were later collated on his Remixes 2002-2012 compilation. Tanzmann has also contributed to numerous notable compilation and mix series, including Fabric in 2012, Circo Loco in 2011, and numerous others.

The breadth, depth and consistency of his Moon Harbour label over the years are also testament to Matthias Tanzmann’s dedication to electronic music. The label has released countless EPs, LPs and compilations, and has A&Red new talents and nurtured established stalwarts in equal part, from Sable Sheep to Dan Drastic, Ekkohaus to Luna City Express.

Martin Buttrich

Martin Buttrich’s journey into electronic music began in clubs in Berlin and Hanover at the dawn of the ‘90s, when post-Summer of Love-Europe began to swing to its own hypnotic, machine-like groove. At the age of eighteen, he began experimenting with production as X-Rotation (with Daniel Bross), which led to the projects Rhythm Assault, Sounds of Life and Phunk Diggaz (with engineer Andy Bolleshon).[7]

In the mid-'90s, Buttrich began collaborating with his then co-worker at Peppermint Jam distribution, Timo Maas. After setting up his first studio in the basement of the Peppermint Park studio building, the partnership led to over 100 co-productions, as well as and remixes of acts including Madonna (entertainer), Muse (band), Fatboy Slim, Tom Jones (singer), Kelis, Depeche Mode, Placebo (band), Roger Sanchez, Josh Wink, and Green Velvet. The duo's remix of Azzido Da Bass's “Dooms Night” later hit the top ten of the UK singles charts.[8]

After his success as a remixer and producer, Buttrich launched a DJ career, and has since appeared at festivals like Time Warp Festival and Creamfields, at super-clubs such as Fabric (club), Womb (Tokyo), Cocoon (Frankfurt), Panorama Bar (Berlin) and Amnesia (Ibiza), and at worldwide Desolat Experience parties with Loco Dice.[9]

Buttrich released his debut solo album Crash Test in 2010.
