One of his earlier bands featured a young Eddy Arnold.[3] He was a member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, performing and recording with the group on bass from 1940 until 1944.[4] He sang lead and played bass on the Blue Grass Boys' recording of "The Coupon Song". After leaving the band, he continued to perform as the featured comedian on the Grand Ole Opry under his stage name, Cousin Wilbur.[5] He was also a performer on the Louisiana Hayride.[6] He married Blondie Brooks in 1947 and they would perform and record as the "Cousin Wilbur and Blondie Brooks Show" for many years.
