Biola Matesun (Abi) is a Nigerian cinematographer and filmmaker based in Dallas, Texas. He has earned international recognition for his works in wedding cinematography, documentary and short films.[1] He is the Creative Director at MALEKFOTFILMS and MALEKFOTOWEDDINGS; a video production company known for delivering premium digital content both in commercial and creative expressions. Abi is a two-time EMMY Award winner and in 2018, he earned two TELLY Awards in cinematography and editing for an Iceland love story commercial- FIRE & ICE.[2][2] Early YearsBiola, the third of four children was born in Lagos in 1974. He had his early education at Fountain School in Surulere and Nigerian Navy Primary School while his secondary education was at Nigerian Navy Secondary School. He got admitted to Yaba College of Technology to study Quantity Survey but somehow the Nigerian society conspired to deny him that education with lecturers in higher institutions constantly on strikes at the time. A situation which had a telling effect on the education system to such extent that almost four years after Biola was yet to conclude his Ordinary Diploma course that ought to last for 18 months. In 1997, he relocated to the U.S. to begin life all over again. He enrolled at the University of Texas in Dallas, where he obtained a degree in Management and Information Systems.[3] CareerBiola has always considered himself a creative. When a friend, a model at the time gifted him a Canon camera in the year 2000, he believed he had found a medium for self expression. He took a trip to different countries in Africa in 2004 where he began a photography project on HIV, poverty and children. With a couple of exhibitions in Nigeria after the completion of the project, he realized that the images didn’t tell the whole story. He quickly realized he was a storyteller and needed a medium to effectively tell stories. This gave birth to the video form of storytelling through his production company- MALEKFOTOFILMS.[1] As a wedding videographer, Biola Matesun's outfit, MALEKFOTOWEDDINGS a subsidiary company he started two years after became the toast of many wedding ceremonies around the world with viral video that easily made their way online, gathering millions of views and comments from around the world.[3][4] AwardsIn June of 2018, Biola Matesun won two TELLY AWARDS in cinematography and editing with "FIRE and ICE", a love story filmed in Iceland. In November 2018, he won two EMMY AWARDS in cinematography and editing for his short film INNER CONFLICT- a 10 minutes short film about a boxer who at the point of the greatest fight of his life, his mum had cancer and passed on and his girlfriend was pregnant with a baby.
