The wooden church from Calna, Vad commune, Cluj county, has been built in 1671 and it is dedicated to „Saints Archangels Mihail and Gavriil”. The church can be found on the new list of historical monuments under the following LMI code: cod LMI{{codLMI|CJ-II-m-B-07542}}CJ-II-m-B-07542.

The church has been recently renovated[1] due to the efforts of father Iustin Marchiș, native from the village of Calna.[2]

Historic

The first documentary mention of the village was in 1325, under the name of Kalna[3]. „The Saints Archangels Mihail and Gavriil” wooden church,  a valuable historical monument, dates back to 1671. On the portal of the door has been incised the following incription: „văleat 1671 i cra[li]e Arde[a]lu c[r]aiu Mihai Apafi”. It has trails of mural painting, realized on an unknown date. The church has been restored in 2000. In 1658 the village had a priest, which implies the existence of a previous place of worship.[4]

Features

The church is divided in narthex, nave and a rectangular altar which is unhooked. The dimensions of the monument are modest. The walls have been carved from beech oak which have been placed on horizontal crowns. The ends of the beams are joined together after the system of the loops of the  swallow's tail. The porch ,which is unfolding the entire length of the south side, is sustained by six poles decorated with rings and trusses. The short entrance is opening in the southern wall of the narthex. the jamb which frame the door are decorated with the motif of the twisted rope, sculpted in high relief, but with solar rosettes, crosses and broken lines. The bell tower elevated on the western end of the roof has the form pf a porch with the square plane section. Above the watchtower is elevated the pyramidal coif covered with shingle and which is gifted with two semicircular arcades on each side. On the inside, the narthex is melted. In the wall that separates it from the nave there is a door with with the frameworks decorated with rosettes and broken lines. The nave has been covered with a semi-cylindrical vault of planks. Two little windows opened on a side and the other, lights the nave. The vault of the altar is semi-cylindrical. The painting of the church, affected by the passing of time, has been preserved only partially and proven successive interventions of some unknown painters.[5]
