She was born in Zimbabwe to a South African father and Zambian mother who were living in exile from South Africa during the apartheid era.[3] Because of this she is able to rap in four different languages which include Zulu, Sotho, Shona and Bemba and goes beyond hip-hop with infusions of Reggae, Neo-soul and Afro-funk.[4] After losing her mother to cancer Black Bird lived in the Harare Children's Home for two years and completed her primary school at Admiral Tait before going to Roosevelt Girls High. Music CareerTouted as the Zimbabwean Nikki Manaj[4] Black Bird came onto the Zimbabwe hip hop scene from a poetry background. Black Bird's musical style goes beyond hip-hop with infusions of reggae, neo-soul and afro-funk. Initially falling in love with hip hop from the age of 9, the early 90s inspired BlackBird to pursue a career in hiphop. The music of MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Da Brat, Nonchalant, Missy Elliott, Eve, and Left Eye helped Black Bird shape her musical style.[5] She studied film-making, journalism and broadcasting[6] and pursued a career in film and TV production for several years before returned in 2009 to begin her full time career as a professional hip-hop artist. She released her debut Album Rappetizer[4] in 2010. She was the first female rapper in Zimbabwe to produce a solo album.[7] 2011 Black Bird become the first female rapper to perform at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA)[8]. In 2012 Black Bird became the first musician from Zimbabwe to be featured on a world mixed tape[9] by the World Hip Hop Market and Nomadic Wax Records called ‘World Hip-Hop Women: From The Sound Up’ [10] compiled by Detroit-based female disk jockey, DJ La Jedi[11]. Against a backdrop of sidelining of the hip hop industry in Zimbabwe, Black Bird was instrumental in the setting up of the Zimbabwe Hip Hop Association and served as its inaugural chairperson from 2012.[12] Black Bird put her rap career on ice temporarily in 2012 when she joined Star FM Radio, a state owned station.[13] In 2017 Black bird produced her first Christian Hip hop project called Introducing Temple in 2017. This was her first project under the alias Temple, Though she went to to change it and insists she use both names with Temple being for her christian rap and Black Bird for the huslter.[14] Shw went on to be named amongst the top 5 African female rappers in 2017. [15] ControversyWhile hosting a breakfast show on Star FM Radio in 2013 Black Bird was dismissed for making allegedly stating that President Robert Mugabe's was of Malawian origin.[16] She made the broadcast on the day of his 89th birthday.[17] In the run up to the release of the video Waiting For Love, rumours started circulating that Black Bird was in a relationship with Tatea Da MC.[18] This was after pictures were circulating on social media. It turned out these were scenes from the video which featured Tatea.[19] After the 2014 National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) Black Bird wrote a scathing open letter to the Ministry of Arts & Culture and the National Arts council about questionable criteria used for selecting winning entries amongst other things. [20] Radio & TVAfter being sacked from Star FM Black Bird went on to start a 30 minute hip hop show on ZTV called Hot Box for which she was nominated for Best Promoter at the Zimbabwe Hip Hop Awards[21] Awards & Nominations
