HistoryThe Women's University Settlement was founded by female students from Girton College and Newnham College at Cambridge University; Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College at Oxford University; and Bedford College and Royal Holloway University. Active members included Helen Gladstone, the Prime Minister's daughter, and Octavia Hill, who became a housing reformer and founder of the National Trust.[1] In 1961 the group's name was changed to Blackfriars Settlement in respect to men's involvement and to be more inclusive of local community involvement. The moved into the Rushworth Street building in 1992, a purpose built structure that replaced a run down Georgian Town House. It in turn became dated with leaks in its flat roof and rented accommodations on at Suffolk Street was used while renovation took place.[1] Baronness Margaret Wheeler who heads UNISON and serves in the House of Lords is the group's trustee and chair.[4] In 2010 it moved its headquarters to Great Suffolk Street.[5] Workers on the nearby Blackfriars Station made a donation to the charity.{[6] Rev. Mark Beach became the group's director in 2015 succeeding Julie Corbett-Bird.[7] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.blackfriars-settlement.org.uk/history|title=Our History|website=www.blackfriars-settlement.org.uk}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/data/gb106-5/wus|title=Records of the Blackfriars Settlement - Archives Hub}} 3. ^{{cite web | url=https://aim25.com/cgi-bin/vcdf/detail?coll_id=10315&inst_id=65&nv1=search&nv2= | title=AIM25 collection description}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/4861|title=Blackfriars Settlement chair Baroness Wheeler makes House of Lords debut|first=London SE1 website|last=team|website=London SE1}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/4743|title=Blackfriars Settlement moves to Great Suffolk Street|first=London SE1 website|last=team|website=London SE1}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/4598|title=Blackfriars Station workers present cheque to local charity|first=London SE1 website|last=team|website=London SE1}} 7. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/8062 | title=Mark Beach: From cathedral dean to Blackfriars Settlement director}} External links
