History

Extensive market research was conducted for over six months by founder Chris Jackson before Blue Sprocket Pressing began. This research primarily consisted of research into the vinyl production industry on a national scale. In particular, Jackson and his team analyzed trends in the vinyl industry over the last 30 years, and paid close attention to pricing and production volume. Due to the relatively small number of vinyl pressing companies, Jackson was aware that his market would not be limited to clients in Virginia and the surrounding areas. Other than Furnace Record Pressing in Alexandria, VA, there were no other vinyl pressing companies in the area to compete with.

Once it was determined that the company would be economically feasible, Blue Sprocket Pressing officially became a business registered in Virginia with the filing of its limited liability company (LLC) registration in October of 2017. The initial funding for the venture came from a combination of approximately half owner capital provided by Jackson and half bank loans.

Staff

Blue Sprocket Pressing is jointly managed by Chris Jackson and Logan Stoltzfus. Jackson and Stoltzfus have co-ownership over the company, and Stoltzfus is additionally the plant operations manager.

Chris Jackson is additionally the owner and chief engineer of Blue Sprocket Sound, a recording studio adjacent to the plant. Jackson originally studied at James Madison University, but decided to drop out to devote all of his time to a career in the music industry. Without knowing anyone there, Jackson decided to move to Nashville to see this goal realized. He soon got in contact with Vance Powell, who helped start Blackbird Studio in 2002. This is one of the nation’s premier recording studios, and Jackson managed to get an internship there due to his connection with Powell. He eventually found himself back in Harrisonburg in 2008, where he started Blue Sprocket Sound after identifying an unfilled market for a music studio in the area. He eventually started Blue Sprocket Pressing almost 10 years later in 2017, directly adjacent to the studio.

Logan Stoltzfus is the plant operations manager of Blue Sprocket Pressing. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the plant. These include (but are not limited to) overseeing the operation of plant equipment and communicating with clients.

Services

Clients

Blue Sprocket Pressing is unique in that it can efficiently cater to low-volume clients. There are few vinyl pressing companies available to begin with around the country, and those that are around generally cater to high-volume clients. These clients typically order batches of vinyl records that range from 50-100,000 copies. The lead time for delivery at these companies can often reach three months. Clients ordering smaller batches from these companies generally have to wait as long as clients ordering larger batches. Blue Sprocket Pressing, however, has the capacity produce smaller batches at a much more expedited rate. A typical order of 100-1,000 copies of a record placed at Blue Sprocket Pressing can usually be delivered within 10 weeks of ordering.

Due to the extensive network in the music industry Jackson has built over his career, Blue Sprocket Pressing largely relies on traditional word-of-mouth advertising to acquire new clients.

Equipment

For on-site operations, Blue Sprocket Pressing is equipped with a Viryl WarmTone record press. Jackson and Stoltzfus made the decision early on to purchase equipment and choose a space that, if needed, could support a total of five additional record presses in the event that Blue Sprocket Pressing expands their operation.

Other operations, including cutting and plating, album jacket printing, inner jacket material printing, and the production of the PVC compound that the records are pressed from are outsourced to other companies. Some of the companies that Blue Sprocket Pressing outsources its services to include Welcome to 1979, Imprint, and TPC Plastics.
