The BlutFrau, or Blood Woman is a female blood demon in German folklore that is said to have lurked the woods of the medieval Black Forest region. The BlutFrau is typically depicted as having long blond hair, being over seven feet tall (although not classified as a giantess) and breathing fire while bleeding from her mouth and eyes. In some tellings, the BlutFrau is believed to be the offspring of the forest goddess Holda and Lucifer. In others the BlutFrau is the daughter or a messenger of Soniellon, one of the seven demon princes of hell.

Characteristics

Regardless of the origin story, the BlutFrau is consistently said to be an instrument of evil in covenant with the Devil. Legend claims that she would attack Christians who wondered into her parts of the woods but ignore those who pledged their souls to Satan. Verbal folklore refers to the BlutFrau following orders from witches, asking her to do their bidding sometimes as the result of a Black Mass. Some have suggested that this is borrowed from Jewish Golem mythology but others dispute that the Golem legend would not have traveled to the isolated part of Europe during the short time period where the BlutFrau myth was prevalent.

Some classify the BlutFrau as a Succubus, but in most tales there is no sexual contact between her and any humans. In later tellings the BlutFrau had no legs and was given similar characteristics to the Tazelworm. Earliest tales of the BlutFrau were spread by lower clergy and may have contributed to the rise in witch hunts in the Black Forest during the 12th and 13th centuries. The most famous account of the BlutFrau comes from Eberhard, The Priory of St. Ulrich who claimed to have been on pilgrimage when he witnessed the BlutFrau breathing fire on a farmhouse, standing as tall as the building itself. In some stories the BlutFrau is accompanied by a pack of wolves.

In Popular Culture

The BlutFrau appeared in an episode of the 1954 German Public Radio show Der Horror where she terrorized an isolated plague ridden farm family.

1990s regional shock rock/black metal band [https://www.blutfrau.de/ BlutFrau] named themselves after the creature and had images of her emblazoned on their tapes and other merchandise.

A film surrounding BlutFrau lore is currently in development through [https://www.storylandpictures.com/ Storyland Pictures] with Derrick Borte attached as director.
