BiographyStewart began his performing and recording career in bands that played around the New York City area. He performed at such legendary venues as Trude Heller's, C.B.G.B. and Max's Kansas City sharing bills with Elephant's Memory (John Lennon and Yoko Ono's backing band in the 1970's), Rank & File featuring Alejandro Escovedo, and The Fleshtones. During this period, Stewart was in heavy rotation on cable TV with videos for two of his compositions, "I've Got My Mind Made Up" and "Coup D'etat." Stewart had recorded for several independent labels before signing with Warner Bros. Records as a solo artist. Warner Bros. released a new version of "Copyright On Love" with a remix by John "Jellybean" Benitez (Madonna, The English Beat, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson). This recording received substantial airplay on KISS-FM, WBLS-FM, AND WKTU-FM. The release received positive reviews in Trouser Press, Dance Music Report, High Fidelity and Billboard and made it onto the national Billboard charts.[3] The original recording of "Copyright On Love" (released on indie label SOS Records) was a regional hit. In the late 80's, Stewart signed a major music publishing deal with the newly activated CBS Music Publishing(now Sony/ATV Music). Through the years, Stewart has been the recipient of several ASCAP Awards. Stewart has recorded and performed with members of The Psychedelic Furs, Buzzcocks and The Roches as well as prominent jazz musicians such as Chris Botti. Stewart was also one of the original performers in the Loser's Lounge, a songwriter tribute series that continues selling out venues to this day. Among Stewart's other projects, in May 2001, he was invited by the Woody Guthrie Foundation to create music for, and perform in concert, lyrics written by Woody Guthrie[4] In 2005, his band Bobby Stewart & The Contraires contributed an original song entitled "Happy Holiday" to the Holiday Heart benefit album.[5] More recently, Stewart was the Executive Producer of the 1st solo album by Procol Harum's Keith Reid, "The Common Thread" (Rockville 2008) which featured such well known artists as John Waite, Southside Johnny, Terry Reid and others.[6] In 2014, Stewart released a retrospective album entitled "Before Now"[7] and currently he is active as a songwriter and producer.
