Bohumil Herlischka (1919 – February 2006) was a Czech opera director. LifeDuring his time as senior director at the National Theater Prague from 1951 to 1957, he made himself so unpopular with the State leadership that he went to the West to the Deutsche Oper Berlin. There he worked not only in Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Düsseldorf, Vienna, Milan, but also in other cities and especially in Düsseldorf. In Düsseldorf he also staged Der Freischütz as early as 1961, but he met with strong indignation, since Herlischka did not stage a Happy End as usual. This performance almost brought him a ban on his work, despite the successes he had: in 1959, for example, he staged the original version of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.[1][2] In addition to Walter Felsenstein he was a pioneer of expressive-poetic theatre and his performances were revived again and again over several years. Herlischka died in Düsseldorf at age around 86. Sources
