The Boise Phil was founded in 1967 under music director Jacques Brourman. In 1967, Mathys Abas took over as music director, followed by Dan Stern, who is the current leader of the Boise Baroque Chamber Orchestra; James Ogle, who is the current leader of the Meridian Symphony Orchestra; and then Robert Franz; and then Eric Garcia, who is the current music director.

Music director Eric Garcia has been with the Boise Phil since 2017, after Robert Franz stepped down after eight seasons with the Boise Phil. His past experience included working as assistant conductor for the Seattle Symphony. He also gained experience working with pop musicians Brandi Carlile, Pink Martini, and Herbie Hancock. He has also collaborated with other composers such as John Adams, Sergio Assad, and George Crumb.

The Boise Phil holds many of its concerts at the Morrison Center. The lobby is spacious and airy, with a comfortable space for audience members to move freely during intermissions. Visitors note that this occurs at any Philharmonic concert.

The premier month of the Morrison Center in April of 1984 featured the Boise Phil’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem. The Morrison Center is one of the home stages for the Boise Phil, as well as for other local art groups.

In 2016, Esther Simplot, Boise arts patroness and widow of Idaho agriculture J.R. Simplot, established a three million-dollar endowment to continue supporting Boise art organizations such as the Boise Phil, Opera Idaho, and Ballet Idaho.

In 1992, Esther and J.R. Simplot provided a 1.1 million-dollar endowment to support the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy. This building is located on the corner of 9th and Myrtle in Boise. It houses the offices, rehearsal studios, performance spaces, and educational branches of the Boise Phil, Opera Idaho, and Ballet Idaho. In 1992 it consisted of only one building. Since then, since then it has expanded to three buildings which are the Annex, the Academy, and the offices for Ballet Idaho. The buildings are more than one hundred years old and were a part of Boise’s warehouse district.

The Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy is renowned for its educational outreach.

Forty Boise Phil musicians provide music accompaniment for Ballet Idaho’s performances and rehearsals.
