Brandy the Pug is a dog born in San Diego, California who has gained a large following on social media for surfing and snowboarding.[1][2][3][4] Brandy's Facebook page has a little over 6000 likes and followers while her Instagram and Twitter account has over 62.8 thousand and 2000 followers respectively.[3][4] Both Brandy and her owner, Jonny Dorman, have YouTube accounts sharing videos of Brandy surfing and snowboarding.[2][3][5] Brandy was featured in a snowboarding video on GoPro's Youtube channel, reaching over two million views.[6] Brandy began her social media journey back in 2014 and has been increasing in popularity since. Due to this fame, she is recognized in the pug dog world as an internet celebrity, even befriending the king of pop culture, Doug the Pug. Brandy has competed in California Dog Surfing Contests and in the World Dog Surfing Championships.[6][8][9] Interestingly, Brandy did not always have a passion for the water as she did not enjoy her first time in the pool.[10] Her owner, Jonny Dorman, describes Brandy's love for surfing as accidental.[6][10] Brandy eventually became accustomed to the pool and began jumping in to swim with her family.[10] As a result, boogie boards were placed around the pool for her safety. As time went on, Brandy became comfortable with them and started to walk across the boards as a way to navigate the pool.[6][10] Brandy naturally learned to sit, stand, and walk across the boogie boards, even grabbing the leash to pull other boogie boards towards her to jump on them.[10]

After moving to a new home without a pool in 2013, Brandy's owner began taking her to the beach to surfboard, where she first started surfing in the ocean.[6][10] Even as a surfing newbie, Brandy was able to catch a few waves. Later in 2014, Brandy received her very own body board, where she demonstrated her natural skill in balancing and being comfortable on the board.[10] The only training that Brandy's owner, Jonny Dorman had done was train her to stay back on the board so she wouldn't fall off.[10] Since then, Brandy has entered in six dog surfing competitions, placing in all of them.[10] Brandy has been able to help raise money for animals in need, such as the Helen Woodward Animal Center, Marin Humane Society, Muttville, and the Peninsula Humane Society by participating in these surfing competitions.[7][8]
