Brian Rosenworcel is an American musician. He is best known as the percussionist, a lyricist and one of the founding members of the band Guster

Background

  • Birth name: Brian Andrew Rosenworcel
  • Born: July 23, 1973 (age 45)
  • Origin: West Hartford, Connecticut U.S.
  • Music Genres: Alternative rock, pop rock
  • Instruments: Drum set, congas, bongos, djembe, hybrid drums, hand-held percussion and trombone

Early life

Rosenworcel is the youngest child of Elliott (a retired nephrologist) and Willa Rosenworcel, and was raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. His sister, Jessica Rosenworcel, serves as a member of the U.S. Federal Communication Commission. Brian Rosenworcel currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with his wife, daughter and twin sons.[1]

In 1995, Rosenworcel graduated with honors from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and earned a degree in American Studies. While at Tufts, he met his future band mates, Adam Gardner and Ryan Miller (musician).

With Guster

On the first two Guster albums Parachute and Goldfly, Rosenworcel primarily utilized his bare hands to strike both drums and cymbals. The band’s 3rd album, Lost and Gone Forever, credits Rosenworcel with playing percussion exclusively with his hands.[2] This method of percussion lends a distinct sound quality to Guster's music, and garners a positive reaction from audiences. This can been observed during the band's first live performance on the Conan O'Brien Show, when the audience roared with approval as Rosenworcel escalated to Mezzo forte on his hand drums and cymbals.[3] His utilization of the drum set and sticks are featured on Guster's 4th album, Keep It Together, subsequent recordings and during performances.[4] Band mate Ryan Miller referred to him as "The Thundergod," (a name usually used to describe drummer Rick Allen of the band Def Leppard) and the nickname stuck. Rosenworcel is commonly addressed as The Thundergod during interviews, in articles and by fans.[5][6] Rosenworcel is often the spokesperson for the band through his witty writings, blogs, videos and newsletters. His Road Journal[7] and on-line Studio Journal poke fun at he and his colleagues’ experiences on the road and off. Rosenworcel coined the name "Gusterrhoids" in reference to the band's fans.[8] Currently, there are nearly a quarter of a million Gusterrhoids who follow the band on Facebook.[9] Although Rosenworcel does not routinely sing with the band, he occasionally provides fans with an off-key cover version of a song during show encores.[7][10] Most of the songs on Guster’s seven studio albums are a collaboration of all band members. Lead singer Ryan Miller is credited with writing the majority of the lyrics, but lyrics for the songs Never Coming Down, Satellite (Guster song) (which earned the band a Certified Gold record),[18] https://www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/?tab_active=default-award&se=guster#search_section Retrieved 25 March 2019, Ruby Falls, Amsterdam (Guster song), Homecoming King, Keep It Together, Red Oyster Cult and The Beginning of the End are credited to Rosenworcel.[4][11][12]

The Sarkin Connection

In 2010, Guster was preparing to release their 6th studio album Easy Wonderful,[13] but had not yet decided upon the cover art. Rosenworcel had an epiphany that artist savant Jon Sarkin should create the artwork. This is described by author Amy Ellis Nutt in her book Shadows Bright as Glass: The Remarkable Story of One Man’s Journey from Brain Trauma to Artistic Triumph. Nutt also explains how the successful collaboration of band and artist was largely due to the Rosenworcel family. Rosenworcel's wife Megan met Sarkin in 2008, and procured some of his art pieces. Brian set the wheel in motion to appoint Sarkin as the artist for the Easy Wonderful album, but ultimately much more resulted from this paring. Not only did Sarkin create the artwork for the cover, his work appears throughout the album insert and in the liner notes. Merchandise sold during shows on the Easy Wonderful tour included Sarkin images. Additionally, the official video for the Guster song "Do You Love Me" features his artwork, as well as a cameo appearance by Sarkin himself.[14][15]
