Brian Simpson

Bian Simpson OBE[1], FIStructE is a British structural engineer born in 1932 in Willesden, London.[2]

Early Life & Education

Simpson left school in 1948 and started working at Dawnays Ltd, a steel fabricating comapny. He attended evening classes at Westminster Technical College and then the Brixton School of Building and obtained a Higher National Certificate in Building in 1953. [2]

Career

From 1953-55 Simpson served his National Service in the Corps of the Royal Engineers in which he was comissioned to the Middle East. [2] He returned to London to work with Dawnays but soon moved to Husband & Co, consulting engineers. He designed a number of winding towers for new and existing collieries and then worked on the satellite communications aerial at Goonhilly Downs, and roll-on/roll-off ferry terminals and movable bridges. [3] He designed replacement bridges over the entrance to Regent’s Canal in Stepney and over the London/Midland Region railway prior to electrification. He worked on the replacement of the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straits after it was damaged by fire in 1970. He led the inspection and appraisal of all public road bridges owned by the British Waterways Board which resulted in may substandard bridges being strengthned or replaced.[3]

In 1985 he joined the British Standards Institute Committee on drafting the Code for the design of bridges and was convenor of the subcommittee concerned with bridge loading. Simpson was President of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1995-96[2].
