Bright Light Volunteers International, also known as Bright Light Volunteers or BLV, is a Dallas, Texas-based nonprofit organization that aids in the planning and development of volunteer-abroad programs, serving impoverished nations all over the world..[1] The organization is built on two key components: promoting sustainability in the regions its volunteers serve in[2] and facilitating "cross cultural awareness," [3] which leads to the growth of knowledgeable global leaders[4]. Bright Light Volunteers was founded in June 2013 by Catherine Greenberg[5], and is currently managed by Greenberg and a small staff of volunteers and employees.

Timeline

Inspiration

When her children were 5 and 7 years old, founder, Catherine Greenberg gave them the opportunity to travel and serve others abroad[5]. In doing so, Greenberg saw the effect that helping the less fortunate had on her children, and thus the idea for the organization, which at the time consisted of student-led volunteer groups, was conceived[5].

Founding

In an effort to get the organization off the ground with its first volunteer-abroad program, Bright Light Volunteers began with a contest called "Shine Your Light on the World"[2]. This contest asked for students to submit videos of how they volunteer in their own communities[2]. The group chosen to have the most original and most altruistic volunteering practices were awarded with an all-expenses-paid trip for ten on the first Bright Light Volunteers program to Peru[2]. With the success of this first student-based program, Bright Light Volunteers found their niche in the service-abroad industry.

Today

Although Bright Light Volunteers was founded with the idea of working with student groups,[5] the organization has expanded to include volunteer-abroad programs for adult groups as well [6]. Currently, more than 70% of volunteers' program donations reach the communities in need directly [7]. Services provided by Bright Light Volunteers include constructing wells in Ghana, tending permaculture farms in Costa Rica, and teaching in Cambodia [3].

Notable Destinations

Cuba

Bright Light Volunteers' first exploratory program embarked on Cuba in 2015, just months after President Barack Obama loosened U.S. travel restrictions that had been in place since the Embargo was enacted in the late 1950s[4]. In 2016, Bright Light Volunteers partnered with Bethel University (Tennessee) professor, Stacie Freeman, on its first official Cuban volunteer program, entitled "Cuba:Unlocked"[4][8].

In Cuba, volunteers visit Havana and Viñales to work on an organic vegetable farm[9]. Another important aspect of Cuba: Unlocked is that volunteers act as ambassadors to the United States, in an effort to strengthen Cuba–United States relations[9].

Since its first exploratory program, Bright Light Volunteers has completed over a dozen service programs to Cuba, and despite 2017's travel warnings, the Cuba:Unlocked program has been "increasing in growth and popularity"[10]

In 2017, Bright Light Volunteers' Cuba: Unlocked program was recognized as finalist at the GoAbroad Innovation Awards, held in Los Angeles, California.[6]

Peru

Bright Light Volunteers' first initial volunteer program was to Peru in 2014.[3]. In Peru, volunteers visit Cusco and Lima to repair schools and help sustain the community's economy by assisting with building guinea pig farms [3], as guinea pigs are a Peruvian delicacy[3]

Vietnam

Bright Light Volunteers is working with a variety of other nonprofit organizations to build a program in Vietnam called "Building Bridges,".[6] coming available in the summer of 2018. Since there are many school children who must cross unsafe bridges in order to get to school, the volunteers will assist with repairing and constructing bridges[6]

Bethel University Partnership

In 2016, Bright Light Volunteers began a partnership with Bethel University, of McKenzie, Tennessee, so that volunteers could earn college credit as part of their volunteer experience[9]. The first partnership of its kind, Bethel University's Global studies program and the school's dual enrollment program allows college students and high school Juniors and Seniors to earn three hours of college credit as they learn about the history and culture of their chosen destination before they travel[11].
