The Brown Journal of Philosophy, Politics & Economics (JPPE) is an international academic journal of philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE), published biannually at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded in 2017 by Julian D. Jacobs and Daniel Shemano. The JPPE publishes undergraduate, graduate, and recent postgraduate research in the disciplines of Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics, and features pieces authored by public officials and world leaders.

The JPPE is funded and sponsored by Brown's Political Theory Project.[1]

Controversies

Political Theory Project

On Feb 24, 2018, the Providence Journal reported that the Koch Foundation had poured over $3 million into the Political Theory Project in the past decade.[2] These donations sparked criticism by anonymous Brown faculty.[3] In response to such criticism, Political Theory Project director, John Tomasi, published a defensive op-ed in the Brown Daily Herald.[4] This debate prompted student articles both defending and criticizing the Political Theory Project.[5] Co-Founder of the JPPE, Daniel Shemano, published an op-ed in defense of the Political Theory Project,[6] but failed to disclose his receiving of a monetary scholarship from the Political Theory Project, prompting further debate.[7][8]

Oxford PPE

On Feb 12, 2019, Brown undergraduate, Anuj Krishnamurthy, raised concerns that the JPPE's alleged "fawning affirmation" of Oxford University’s academic PPE program is "ill-considered, lacking a forthright interrogation of the program’s pedagogical utility or its role in the perpetuation of inequality in the United Kingdom."[9] Krishnamurthy's criticism prompted a response from JPPE Co-Founder, Julian D. Jacobs, who claimed that, "JPPE’s focus on PPE stems, not from admiration of Oxford, but instead from a genuine belief in the ideals of the interdisciplinary approach. The Journal has taken rigorous steps to separate itself from PPE’s history at Oxford and promote inclusion both on campus and off."[10]
