[1]The Cahaba River is the primary source of drinking water for most residents of central Alabama and one of the most ecologically diverse rivers in the United States. [2] Through its initiatives, CRK seeks to ensure clean water, the diversity of the local ecosystem, and a healthy aquatic environment, while supporting the recreational and aesthetic values of the river. The organization collects meaningful scientific data about the river on a regular basis and shares it with the general public [3]. Leadership and Board of DirectorsCahaba Riverkeeper was founded by Myra Crawford, PhD, MPH, in 2009 to protect and document the river's natural resources. The organization's daily operations are overseen by Dr. Crawford, who was the first Riverkeeper, and the current Riverkeeper, David Butler, with the help of its board, community partners, interns, and volunteers.[4] MissionCahaba Riverkeeper defends the ecological integrity of the Cahaba River, its tributaries and watershed to ensure clean water, a healthy aquatic environment, and its recreational and aesthetic values. CRK is dedicated to the scientific study of the Cahaba and ensuring that current, evidence-based data are readily available to the public.[5] Patrolling and Swim GuideCahaba Riverkeeper patrols the watershed daily to monitor for violation of clean water legislation. Each year since 2014, a team of dedicated citizen scientists collects samples at high-use recreation sites throughout the basin from May to September for CRK’s Swim Guide program. Findings are published weekly on social media outlets and the Swim Guide mobile application to inform users about the state of the river’s water. Swim Guide originally included eight locations and has expanded to 18 locations on the Cahaba and its main tributaries. Samples are tested for E.coli levels and other water quality measures, such as dissolved oxygen and pH levels. In 2018, CRK created its own in-house laboratory to facilitate more efficient water testing. Advocacy and CollaborationsCahaba Riverkeeper collaborates with local, state, and national agencies and organizations to enforce the Clean Water Act. CRK is a licensee of the global Waterkeeper Alliance and a member of the local Waterkeepers Alabama, formed by the state’s eight Waterkeepers. CRK works especially closely with its colleagues, the Coosa and Black Warrior Riverkeepers. EducationCahaba Riverkeeper facilitates programs with schools, Scouting groups, churches, and civic organizations to train citizens to appreciate the necessity of clean water programs and to recognize, record and report pollution runoff from construction sites that cause sedimentation problems. CRK is also creating Cahabapedia® to connect the public with important scientific data about the river. OtherCRK holds year-round river-clean-ups throughout the Cahaba basin, focusing on the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge in Bibb County, Alabama. CRK staff members sit on the board of the Friends of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. Looking AheadCRK is building a program of sonar mapping and video graphing of the Cahaba. The information will be made available to the public via an interactive Internet-based map, with the intent that users of Cahabapedia® can also become contributors.
