Camp Sibert Army Airfield was a World War II airfield, located in Gadsden, Alabama. The airfield, under the jurisdiction of The Fourth Army Services Forces, was constructed by base engineers shortly after Camp Sibert was established. It consisted of two paved, unmarked runways; a single, large wooden hangar; a “supply shack”; and two “long, one-floor buildings, partitioned off into three or four rooms”.[1] HistoryThe Early Days: Army Air Forces Detachment #4In April 1943, the USAAF established the Army Air Forces Detachment #4, with the primary mission of “providing arial missions in conjunction with the Chemical Warfare Service located at Camp Sibert, Gadsden, Alabama”.[1] On 03 January, 1944 at 1700 hrs, the unit arrived at its new home, and work began in earnest to prepare the airfield for its important new role.
