The fourth season of Canada's Smartest Person (officially entitled Canada's Smartest Person Junior) is a Canadian reality television competition show. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee hosted the show. Preadolescent contestants compete in a series of different challenges based on American psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences to earn the title of "Canada's Smartest Person." The winner was Mateus Soto, an 11-year-old from Toronto, Ontario.

Format

Unlike the previous three seasons of Canada's Smartest Person which followed a knockout format, this season followed a traditional competitive reality television series format.

Each of the first three episodes began with a Speed Round, which consists of six small challenges, one for each intelligence in a rapid-fire succession. After the challenge, the lowest-scoring contestant was eliminated from the competition automatically and the highest-scoring contestant was deemed safe from elimination for the episode. Then, the remaining contestants were paired based on their rankings in the Speed Round (2nd place with 3rd place, 4th place with 5th place, etc.) and competed in a team challenge. After the challenge, all but the bottom two pairings were deemed safe from elimination for the episode. Afterwards, the remaining four contestants competed in a head-to-head challenge and the top two performers were deemed safe after the challenge. Finally, the remaining two contestants competed in the Ultimate Elimination Zone, which consists of various sudden-death challenges that two contestants compete head-to-head in. Once a contestant won three rounds, that contestant was deemed safe and the other was eliminated from the competition.

The fourth episode also began with a Speed Round, but unlike the first three episodes, the highest-scoring contestant was not deemed safe from elimination for the episode after the challenge. Then, the remaining contestants competed in a head-to-head challenge instead of a team challenge. After the challenge, only the highest-scoring contestant was deemed safe from elimination for the episode. The latter two challenges of the episode proceeded the same way that the latter two challenges of the first three did.

The fifth episode was a Redemption episode in which the first eight eliminated contestants were given a chance to return to the competition and qualify for the finale as a result. Like usual, the episode began with a Speed Round, but, after the challenge, the two lowest-scoring contestants were eliminated from the Redemption episode automatically and the highest-scoring contestant still had to compete in further challenges with the rest. Then, the remaining six contestants competed in a head-to-head challenge that, afterwards, would eliminate the two lowest-scoring contestants from the Redemption episode. Then, the remaining four contestants competed in a head-to-head challenge that, afterwards, would eliminate the lowest-scoring contestant from the Redemption episode and would return the highest-scoring contestant back into the competition. Finally, the remaining two contestants competed in the Ultimate Elimination Zone. The winner of the face-off returned to the competition and the other was eliminated from the Redemption episode.

The sixth and final episode consisted of five head-to-head challenges in which, after each one, the lowest-scoring contestant would be eliminated from the competition. The last of these challenges was the Super Gauntlet, a Canada's Smartest Person classic, which would determine the winner of the competition.

EpisodeNumber = 1EpisodeNumber2 = 1Title = Episode 12018|11|14}}ShortSummary = The episode begins with a summary of the 3 seasons of Canada's Smartest Person, before introducing the 12 kids, aged 10-12, who are to be competing on the show; as well as the format of the competition.

Speed Round: The contestants compete in a series of 6 rapid-fire challenges, each testing a single area of intelligence. In order, the challenges were:

  1. 'Highest Value' (logical): 3 pairs of mathematical expressions were shown, one at a time. Contestants must pick the expression with the higher value in each pair.
  2. 'Spell Check' (linguistic): 3 incomplete words were shown, with a blank at the end. Contestants must identify the letters that fill in the blank to spell the word, out of 4 options.
  3. 'Balanced Meal' (physical): Contestants have 30 seconds to balance as many spoons atop 5 pegs, each protruding from a teapot on a turntable.
  4. 'Music Match' (musical): 5 similar percussive rhythms were played back-to-back, with 2 rhythms exactly identical. After they all played, contestants must identify which 2 rhythms were identical. This challenge was played 3 times.
  5. 'Spin Cycle' (visual): A 3-reel slot machine with pictures of a football, a soccer ball, a volleyball, a basketball, a tennis ball, an 8 ball, a baseball, and a circle with an eye is spun. In each of 3 rounds, the reels will stop 3 times. Once the reels stop for the final time, contestants must identify which ball/symbol appeared in the center line the most times. In the final round, a 4th reel is added.
  6. 'Mixed Emotions' (social): One at a time, 3 faces are shown, with the bottom of the image cropped from the mouth down. Contestants are shown 4 mouths for each face, and must identify which mouth matches the face based on the expression the eyes convey.

Elimination: When the final challenge ended, every contestant's performance was converted to a percentage. The 10 contestants who placed 2nd through 11th and would have to compete in the next challenge were revealed first. These contestants were (in descending rank order) Arjun, Danica, Liam V., Sandra, Ashley, Liam H., Zoe, Matthew Y., Misuzu, and Alexia. Lee then summoned the two remaining contestants, Matthew S. and Mateus, to the front of the stage. He then revealed, with a score of 84%, Mateus had ranked in 1st place and had gained immunity for the episode; whilst Matthew S. was the first to be eliminated, having only scored 54%.

Cake Mix (visual): Before the challenge, the contestants were split up into pairs based on their rankings in the Speed Round: 2nd place with 3rd, 4th place with 5th, and so on. Lee began by introducing special guest Sabrina Degni, who was the winner of The Great Canadian Baking Show (season 1). Contestants were then shown a medieval-themed, three-tier cake, containing 15 distinct elements, namely a dagger, crown, fleur-de-lis, a knight & dragon figurine, a crest, the 3 layers, 2 separators, 2 shields, a set of 4 identical flags (which counts as 1 element), and a banner bearing the writing "VERITAS". When the platform the cake was on was lowered, the teams had to recreate the cake from memory. The bottom 2 teams would have to compete in another challenge, while the other 3 teams would win immunity for the episode. The winners were Misuzu & Alexia, who matched 12 of 15 items. Arjun & Danica, Zoe & Matthew Y., as well as Liam V. & Sandra were tied as runners-up teams with 7 items apiece; while Ashley & Liam H. placed last with 4 matches. The 3-way tie was broken with the results of the speed round. Having the worst results of the tied players, Zoe & Matthew Y. were subject to participating in the next challenge alongside Liam H. & Ashley.

Tower of Intelligence (physical): The remaining competitors were put to the test once again, competing individually instead of in pairs. They had to keep an unstable table upright by grasping a rope, and then stack 6 colored blocks (eachmarked with a symbol for each intelligence) of different sizes on the table, with the largest block at the bottom and each block getting smaller as the tower was developed. Should even a single block fall from the tower, the contestant must restart. The first 2 competitors to balance all of the blocks on the table and subsequently recede behind a marked line from the table would make an appearance in the next episode, leaving the losers to participate in the Ultimate Elimination Zone. Ashley was the winner of the challenge, with Matthew Y. finishing close behind; sending Liam H. & Zoe to compete to survive elimination.

Ultimate Elimination Zone: Having been out-performed in all other challenges, Liam H. & Zoe were to compete in a series of sudden-death, head-to-head challenges, each testing a lone area of intelligence. The winner would be the competitor who won 3 challenges first, securing the final spot in the next episode, eliminating the loser. The challenges were (in order):

  1. 'Stack of Shapes' (visual): A picture comprised of 3 overlapping white shapes was shown to each contestant, and they would then have to choose the 3 shapes out of a list of 9. [Winner: Liam H.; Liam H. leads 1-0]
  2. 'Pocket Change' (logical): Each contestant was shown a coin and a piggy bank with a cash value written on it. They were required to declare how many of the coins would be required to obtain the cash value. [Winner: Liam H.; Liam H. leads 2-0]
  3. 'Beat It' (musical): A pair of percussive rhythms were played back-to-back; contestants must identify if the rhythms are identical. [Winner: Zoe; Liam H. leads 2-1]
  4. 'Scrambled' (linguistic): A set of 5 letters were shown to each contestant; the objective was to unscramble the letters to spell a word. [Winner: Zoe; Tied 2-2]
  5. 'Bounce Back' (physical): The contestants would race to bounce 3 red balls into a high funnel, bouncing them off a board to obtain points. [Winner: Zoe; Zoe wins 3-2]

Elimination: After losing the final challenge, Liam H. was eliminated from the competition. Before leaving, he announced his dream of becoming Prime Minister of Canada.
