Catherine Hilliard is an American lawyer notable for representing plaintiffs in product liability and appellate cases for personal injury.

Early Life

Hilliard was born and raised in San Diego, Texas.^[1]

She attended The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996. In 1999, she received her Juris Doctorate from St. Mary’s University School of Law, in San Antonio, Texas, where she was a member of the St. Mary’s Law Review.^[2]

Career

After her law school graduation, Hilliard worked for 10 years as a litigation defense attorney with Gonzales Hoblit Ferguson LLP, one of South Texas’ largest litigation defense firms. In 2005, Hilliard became the firm’s first female Hispanic partner and served as managing partner.^[2]

Later, Hilliard joined Hilliard Muñoz Gonzales, LLP in Corpus Christi. The firm became Hilliard Martinez Gonzales, LLP in 2017 when founding partner Jacobo Muñoz retired and John Martinez was appointed as managing partner. Hilliard is a partner and co-owner of the Hilliard Martinez Gonzales LLP law firm.^[1]

In January, 2019, Hilliard was appointed to the Port of Corpus Christi Commission.^[1] She was one of 11 candidates for the position.^[3] As a member of the Commission, Hilliard will work with the other members to set the port's annual operating budget, promote industrial expansion, and establish operating policy. More crude oil is shipped through the Port of Corpus Christi than through any other U.S. port.^[3]

Oilfield Accident: Baker Hughes Lawsuit

Catherine Hilliard is on the HMG team that sued Baker Hughes Oilfield Operations LLC in 2017 on behalf of plaintiff Neri Quintanilla. Mr. Quintanilla was seriously injured when unsecured tongs fell, knocking him off the drilling platform. The lawsuit alleges that defendants Baker Hughes Inc., Baker Hughes Oilfield Operations LLC, and Verdun Oil & Gas LLC failed to properly supervise the work and failed to enforce safety policies and procedures.^[4]

Philanthropy

Catherine Hilliard serves on the Incarnate Word Academy (Corpus Christi) Board of Directors and is a board member for the Texas State Aquarium, Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation, the Art Museum of South Texas, Fryderyk Chopin Society of Texas, and the Bailando International Dance Festival.^[1]

In April 2017, Hilliard Martinez Gonzales LLC donated $6,500 to United Way of the Coastal Bend to fund 1,000 school supply bags for students in the San Diego Independent School District in San Diego, Texas, where Catherine Hilliard grew up.  In this district, the majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.^[5]

In May 2017, Catherine and Bob Hilliard donated $1 million to Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi, Texas for a new, 14,000-square-foot elementary level Montessori building.^[6]

In September 2018, Catherine Tobin Hilliard, established the Bob Hilliard ’80 Endowed Scholarship to “honor Bob’s accomplishments on the Hilltop, which provided him the foundation for success in his personal and professional life, and to celebrate his 60th birthday on Thursday, September 6, 2018… (the scholarship) is a lasting resource to help support students pursuing an undergraduate English Literature degree…”
