Cde Hlanganiso Tandiwe Matangaidze was a Zimbabwean born business magnate, Industrialist and philanthropist[1]. He was formerly the President of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce [2] [3] and Vice president of the Pan African chamber of commerce and Industry [4]. Upon his death he was declared a Provincial Liberation War Hero by the state.[5] [6]

Early Life

Hlanganiso was born at Zvamavande Hospital in Shurugwi on the 3rd March 1963 to Peter and Matilda Matangaidze. He was the 6th of 7 siblings (Susan,Joyce, Faith, Tamali, Victoria and Tapiwa) and their eldest son. Hlanganiso began his education at Vungwe school. He went onto high school, initially at tengani in Plumtree followed by Bernard Mzeki college in Marondera. On completion of his A levels Hlanganiso enrolled for a Bachelors in Economic History at the University of Zimbabwe. He was one of two students to be awarded a First class pass with Honours. It was during his time at the University of Zimbabwe that he meet his Wife, Vongai Matangaidze.

Career

Hlanganiso was first employed at the national Archives, he left and served as a committee clerk at the parliament of Zimbabwe before joining the Bank of Credit and Commerce, now Known as CBZ. He rose through the ranks to become Mutare Branch Manager. As Branch Manager he championed the black empowerment cause by facilitating loans to capitalise several black entrepreneurs.

Business

Hlanganiso's desire to be an entrepreneur drove him to take the daunting step as a very young man of starting his on business in trucking. He founded Matan Holdings in 1994[7], which is the same year that Matan Trucking was birthed, with it came the nickname by which he was popularly Known, "M'dhara Matan". Other successful businesses followed within the construction, Entertainment, Transport, Real estate, manufacturing, Hospitality, Mining, Brewing and finally the farming industries with the acquisition of Green valley estates.His various achievements earned him recognition by the Zimbabwe National Chamber of commerce (ZNCC) which awarded him both Provincial and National awards. The ZNCC went on to elect him chairman of the Mutare Branch and later, National President.[8]

Philanthropy

Through his Life Cde Matan Donated Millions , to charitable causes and sporting teams such as the Buffaloes F.C., based at the Sakubva stadium which he took over as Chairman.

Personal Life

Cde Matan married Vongai when he was 26. He had one son born 1997. His younger Brother was Tapiwanashe Matangaidze the former Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League chairman, and Former Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.

Death

On the 29th December 2018 Cde Hlanganiso Matangaidze passed away after battling health issues since 2016.
