CEA Study Abroad

CEA Study Abroad is an education program that supports student’s studying in Spain for a semester during college. They internationalize their institution, education, students, and faculty through a range of academic programs and services. However, they integrate a rigorous process of internal and external quality review into their academic programming, and provide professional development opportunities to their faculty.

History

The founder of CEA is Brian Boubek. He, himself went through an undergraduate study abroad program in France that changed his life, however, he knew that his experience could have been better. Because of that, Brian created CEA. In 1997, he wanted to ensure that students enjoy smooth support, from the moment they first decide that they want to study abroad, until to the day they return home, and after that. Almost 20 years later, Brian’s goals still reflect everything they do at CEA.

Reasons for Popularity

Studying abroad has become more popular over the years within college juniors. CEA is one of the most popular programs for students and it gives resources that students could never imagine. Students are getting the opportunity to live across the country for a semester and adapt to a different life style and gain interest in a new culture. These lessons are even more valuable than topics learned in college classes. According to studyabroad.org, [1]

Opportunities

CEA offers different types of programs such as standard programs, hybrid programs, multi-site programs, internships, service learning, and GCDC ( Global Career Development Certificate) available for all students enrolled.

Standard Programs allow students to choose courses within their level or major back at their home college in the states. Depending on the program you choose, you’ll take courses at a CEA Study Center located in the heart of the city.

Hybrid programs offer a little bit of both worlds. Students will experience active-learning classroom discussions in the CEA Study Centers, and the opportunity to take courses with international/ local students at their local partner universities such as University of Barcelona for example. This program provides a more integrated study abroad experience.

Multi- Site Programs are for study abroad students that cannot pick just one location to learn in for a semester. Students can learn in multiple cities with the multi-site program. Whether it’s a travelling the first month, that will give students the opportunity to spend two to three weeks gaining a detailed, hands-on perspective.

Internships that CEA offers are one of the best options they provide for the students. These internships allow students to gain marketable skills while they are studying abroad. These boost student’s résumé while gaining the work experience and skills that set them apart from other students in the program. Most internships offered are part-time and many don’t require foreign language ability. College credit is also available for some of the jobs offered.

Service Learning provides students with the plans to make connections between their host community cultures, and their academic interests while giving back to their host community. Through guided placements, they gain subtle research skills and experience that will benefit their future academic endeavors such as their senior capstone projects. Activities included in this program include special services to public, non-profit, or non-governmental organizations.

GCDC, which is a Global Career Development Certificate (GCDC) allows students to expand their pre-professional experience by connecting with a mentor in their career field of interest. Participating in this mentorship program enhances their résumé by providing practical experience and building skills that employers value. It is a 1-credit seminar, and fields include, non-profit, photojournalism, government, school psychology, entrepreneurship, acting/production, business, marketing, and fashion design.

I learned a lot and am now headed home with memories I will cherish forever. That being said, if you are looking for a study abroad experience that caters more towards maintaining an American identity or fostering a relationship within the student body, this may not be the program for you”.
