History

CECE was formally established in 1959 in London, England. The organisation became increasingly structured and eventually developed its permanent representation in Brussels in 2004. CECE has since been registered on the Transparency Register operated jointly by the European Commission and the European Parliament in May of 2011.[2]

The coordination of work and CECE's external representation is ensured by the CECE President assisted by a 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents. CECE presidency is a rotating post held for two consecutive years by each of the associations representing their member nations.[3]

Issues

CECE secretariat works on a large number of issues, including:

  •       Standardisation and the EU single market
  •       Environment
  •       Safety
  •       Trade
  •       Research & Development & Innovation

With the emergence of Industry 4.0 (also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution) digitisation of industry in Europe has become one of CECE’s main priorities. CECE has been involved in developing the Inclusive Digital Strategy for construction.[4]

The association has furthermore called on the European Institutions to develop an industrial strategy - a call that was coordinated with some 130 European industry associations in 2016 and 2017.[5] President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker announced in his State of the Union (European Union) Speech on Wednesday 13 September 2017 that an industrial strategy would be implemented.[6]
