The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult forms part of the Catapult network[1], established by Innovate UK (previously the Technology Strategy Board) in the United Kingdom to promote research and development through business-led collaboration between scientists and engineers to exploit market opportunities.

Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult is a trading name of Cell Therapy Catapult Limited.

History

The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult was established in 2012 by Innovate UK[2] (previously the Technology Strategy Board). In 2018, Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult employed 180 people in the UK.

Structure and Funding

The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult is a private company limited by guarantee[3]. Funding is gained from a mix of competitively earned commercial funding and core Innovate UK investment[4]. Sources of funding include:

  • business-funded R&D contracts, won competitively
  • collaborative applied R&D projects, funded jointly by the public and private sectors, also won competitively
  • core public funding for long-term investment in infrastructure, expertise and skills development

Locations

The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult is based in Guy’s Hospital, London, where it has laboratory and office space which was opened in June 2014 by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, Secretary of State Sir Vince Cable.

In 2018 it opened a manufacturing centre in Stevenage[5][6]. The centre is MHRA licensed with a Manufacturing and Importation Authorisation (MIA) license and an MIA license for investigational medicinal product (MIA IMP)[7].

Senior management

Keith Thompson has been CEO of Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult since the company’s inception in 2012. The executive management team is also made up of Matthew Durdy, Chief Business Officer, Dr Jacqueline Barry, Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Stephen Ward, Chief Manufacturing Officer and Dr Jonathan Appleby, Chief Scientific Officer.

The executive management team manage the organisation on a day-to-day basis.
