The Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) [1] is an Artificial Intelligence research centre at the University of Surrey. CVSSP was founded in 1986 by Professor Josef Kittler. CVSSP's research focuses upon Machine Perception; specifically the fields of Computer Vision, Machine Audition, Digital Signal Processing and Machine Learning. {{As of|2019}}, CVSSP employs 20 academic staff, 37 postdoctoral researchers, 8 support staff and around 80 research students. The current head of CVSSP is Professor Adrian Hilton.

Component Laboratories

CVSSP is logically grouped into six research labs

  • A-Lab: Machine Audition
  • B-Lab: Biometrics and Security
  • C-Lab: Cognitive Systems
  • D-Lab: Distributed Ledger Technology
  • M-Lab: Medical Imaging
  • V-Lab: Visual Media

Taught Programmes

CVSSP delivers taught postgraduate programmes at MSc level via the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. As of 2019 the programmes offered are:

  • MSc Computer Vision, Robotics, and Machine Learning[2]
  • MSc Mobile Media Communications[3]
  • MSc Medical Imaging[4]

Research Facilities

CVSSP hosts a multiple viewpoint video capture studio (the Visual Media Laboratory), a sound sphere for rendering spatialized audio, a robotics laboratory, and an Ubuntu Linux based compute cluster with approximately 700 CPU cores and 0.5 petabytes of storage as of 2019.[5]

Notable datasets produced by CVSSP used within the Computer Vision community include:

  • XM2VTS – a face and voice biometric database[6]
  • Hollywood3D – an action recognition database[7]
  • TotalCapture – a human pose estimation database[8]
  • SOIL-47 – an object recognition database[9]
