}}CHAINES (Cee Haines) is a British composer and multi-instrumentalist best known for writing electronic and electro-acoustic music.[1]

Career

CHAINES has released three electronic albums with the label Slip Imprint; the joint release 'SPLIT'[2] featuring both CHAINES and Tom Rose, 'OST'[3] and 'The King'[4]. They have also released the mini album 'Survival Horror'[5] on the label FRM-AT. The album 'The King' contains electronic realisations of two pieces originally written for the London Contemporary Orchestra; 'DOWN' and 'Carpathia'.

CHAINES has worked with the London Contemporary Orchestra since 2015, when Oliver Coates performed their track 'I Found This' for 'cello and laptop at The Roundhouse[6][7]. They were first commissioned by the LCO in 2016 to write for Ron Arad's 'Curtain Call' [8] at The Roundhouse, London, for which they wrote 'DOWN'[9], scored for wind and brass, electric guitar and laptop. Since then, they have been commissioned to write a number of works either for or featuring the London Contemporary Orchestra; 'Carpathia' for the Organ Reframed Festival at Union Chapel, London[10], an untitled work for Uniqlo Tate Lates at Tate Modern, London[11] and an electro-orchestral arrangement of 'Knockturning' from the album 'The King' for the BBC Proms 2018[12].

Personal Life

Cee Haines has identified themselves as non-binary, transmasculine and transgender, and uses the pronouns they/them[13]. In an interview with ATTN:Magazine, regards the album 'The King', they said 'One of the things that fed into this album a lot was Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula and my…spiritual (I guess?) connection with the fictional construct of Dracula in general. More recently it’s occurred to me that my connection to the character is linked to my transmasculine gender identity – and feeling sympathy for a character who (arguably and not traditionally) I have viewed as embodying some of the horror I felt having the feelings I have had.'[14]
