Chainmale was an Australian musical artist from the 1980s. The identity of Chainmale is Michael Freeman. Freeman performed plays at the University of Sydney in the early 1970s and is listed as appearing on the Australian music show GTK in April 1973 (1). It is thought that Freeman moved to Tasmania in the early 1980s.

Chainmale was signed to Sydney label Regular Records by the early 1980s (2). Chainmale has the distinction of having three of his songs described as the 'worst 80's music video / song ever!'(3). In fact, Freeman's works as Chainmale are the Australian equivilent of Q Lazarus's 'Goodbye Horses' in their commentary of the desires of the psyche.

Known Chainmale songs with music videos are 'Schizophrenic Breakdown', 'Kickback' and "Freakout'.

Schizophrenic Breakdown was filmed at the Salamanca Markets in Hobart, Tasmania. The theme of the music video is somewhat nautical with Freeman jumping from the rigging of a sailing ship into water at the commencement of the video, and with Freeman wearing a faux common crewman sailor outfit throughout the video, yet footage of United Kingdom police responding to rioting features at the beginning and the midpoint of the video. Freeman does not perform any magic tricks in the video, nor does he mime.

Kickback was filmed at a presently unknown location. The theme of the video is inner urban survival, with Freeman adopting the persona of a skinhead, complete with white braces, which are an indicator that Freeman's skinhead is actually a 'bonehead', a racist skinhead. Freeman however does not accompany the white braces with white boot laces, which would be a clearer indication that the persona is in fact a bonehead. At the time of the video the Builder's Labourer's Federation union was still registered and Freeman's mentioning of fighting for your rights in the lyrics perhaps indicates the theme of the song references a Brandonesque "On The Waterfornt' individual amidst surrounding corruption and inner-dealing. Freeman demonstrates sleight of hand magic tricks and fire breathing in the video.

Freakout was filmed entirely in-studio at a presently unknown location. The theme of the video is mental health, with Freeman variously swaying, dancing, body-popping (poorly) and miming to demonstrate his persona's mental anguish. At one point in the video Freeman also juggles.

The Chainmale Facebook page, a page created by Chainmale fans, also features footage of Freeman miming, delivering a soliloquise and performing magic tricks. (4).
