Charles Joseph Hallifax was a senior member of the Indian Civil Service from 1888 until 1925. Early YearsCharles Joseph Hallifax was born on 29 Apr 1867, in Assam the 3rd son of Benjamin Wilson Hallifax and Mary Anne Cox. Both his parent were orgially from Tiverton. Although Charles Hallifax was born in the Assam/Darjeeling area of India, he was educated in England, attending Blundell's School and then Balliol College, Oxford (1885–1888). CareerCharles commenced his career as an Assist. Commissioner in 1888 and was then promoted as Councillor to Raja of Suket from 1891 to 1983. He became a Junior Secretary to the Government in 1896 and then a Senior Secretary in 1896 where he remained until 19898. He went on to be the Secretary to the Plague Commission from 1898-1901. His next promotion was a Judicial and General Secretary to Government in 1901 and then Deputy Commissioner of Lahore in 1903. His career continued to flourish when he was promoted to the post of Commissioner of Excise and Superintendent of Stamps in 1907 and the Commissioner in 1912. Charles stayed in this post until he was appointed Financial Commission for the Punjab in 1921. He retired from this position and returned to Britain and settled in Shropshire. Unable to settle he and his wife moved to Natal where he died in 1946. FamilyCharles Hallifax married in November 1899 to Sybil Lucy Garrick Renneworth younger daughter of Sir Garrick Renneworth.
