Chaz Wolcott is an American actor, dancer, and choreographer.^[1] He is best known for the national tours of Cats and Newsies (and the filmed stage production of Newsies)^[2], as well as competing on season fourteen of So You Think You Can Dance.^[3]

Early Life

Chaz Wolcott was born in Columbus, Ohio where began dancing at the age of one, due in part to his parents who were swing dancers.^[4] Early on he also discovered a love for musical theater when he played the four year old version of the titular character in a production of The Who's Tommy.^[4]

The family later moved to Henderson, Nevada where he continued his dance training, even landing a guest starring role on the sitcom The King of Queens.^[5] After graduating high school in 2006^[4] he attended Oklahoma City University to study dance.^[1] While in college, he began building up his resume with regional credits.^[5]

Career

Within days of graduating college, landed the role of Mistofolees in the national tour of Cats.^[5] In 2014, he landed the role of Buttons/Scab^[6] in the first national tour of Newsies. ^[7] He went on to portray Buttons for the 2017 live recording of Newsies, though Andy Richardson covered as his scab role.^[8] While on tour, Chaz put together a series of fundraising performances with the touring company, known as The Newsboys Variety Show, to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.^[1]

After the national tour of Newsies concluded, Chaz auditioned for the fourteenth season of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. His tap audition was featured on episode three, "New York Auditions 1", and impressed the judges enough to received a ticket to the Academy.^[9] He made it through the first week of the Academy, but was eliminated on the second Academy week.^[10]

In addition to his performance credits, Chaz has also done extensive work as a director and choreographer, many times taking on regional productions of former credits such as Cats and Newsies.^[11] His choreography has been featured on BC/EFA fundraising events such as the Red Bucket Follies^[12] and Broadway Backwards.^[13] Chaz has also taught at numerous conventions and master classes, and is currently on the faculty at Broadway Dance Center.^[1]
