Chopsuey Improv is a Filipino improv group which is one of the House Teams of Third World Improv (TWI). House Teams are created when a certain batch of students graduate from five levels of Third World Improv's curriculum. The class started out from four classes which was later then merged when they are in Level 3. The four class which Chopsuey originated from are - "18 Carrot", "Are We Us?", "Where's Mariana?" and "20/20". Ever since their graduation last March 27, 2018, the group has then decided to perform as a group in various improv theater shows. Organized Shows and Events
Original Short Form Improv FormatsInside OutThis is a format played by Chopsuey during their Level 3 TWI showcase which is a modification to the game [https://improwiki.com/en/wiki/improv/toaster Toaster]. Denn Milbert Viagedor suggested the modification to the game that is each of the improvisers are assigned one of the five emotions (Happy, Sad, Anger, Fear and Disgust) and that they can only play using that emotion. The emotions are inspired by the movie Inside Out. ElevatorThis is a format first played during the Alter Eco show, which isa modification to the game Hitchhiker but instead of the location being in the car, the scene is happening in the elevator. Another modification is that each player is given a random emotion that they will have to stick to during the game. Modifications are suggested by Ryan Capulong. Original Long Form Improv FormatsTenementA format reserved to be completed for Manila Improv Festival 2019 Room 304"Room 304" is a multi-scene long form buffet. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, the audience plays voyeur to revealing events in different locations. It was originally conceptualized from another long form format "Tenement" conceptualized by a Chopsuey Improv member Denn Milbert Viagedor, which aims to exploit the truths and realities of urban communal living in the Philippines. The group deemed that instead to create a mini version of "Tenement" and play it for Fringeprov 2018 and that "Tenement" will be explored in the upcoming Manila Improv Festival 2019 instead. The format starts with an improvised song followed by three beats of scenes inspired by a suggestion from the audience. Each scene will be the windows of scenes that will be explored through out the format. They are usually unrelated scenes. Then after the three beats have passed, the three scenes will resume starting from the first scene and triggers a cocktail split screen view on stage continuing the each individual scenes, where lines from each scene are taken in a cocktail party style to push each scene forward. The challenge at this part is to tie up the three unrelated scenes as though they are related to each other via an object, a person or a concept. DeyanRyan Capulong and Denn Milbert Viagedor created and performed the Duo format "Deyan". The name Deyan is a play on the name Dianne which is created using two syllables - "De" from Denn, and "Yan" from Ryan. The format explored the reality that all stories are interconnected, one way or another. This is the groups' first Duo format. The format starts with a two one person monologue just like that of the format zoo. Those two monologues will serve as the starting point for two stories. The chosen monologue literally begins the scene. The duo will decide what story to explore first. Regardless of what story is chosen to be explored first, the duo will decide who will play a main character. The player who decides to play as the main character of the story will never change his/her character. The support player will have to change characters if the story requires it. At any point that the first story has been established, any of the players can swipe the scene and begin with the other monologue that was not chosen before and starts a new story. The support character in the previous story this time will choose a character and stick to that character until the second story has been established. The other player can now change his character. Preferably, the two stories should not be similar and can be in a different world. Then the second story has been established, the duo must now find a way to connect the two stories and let the two main characters meet. When the two characters have met, then they will progress with a third story that has both characters in it. References |
