Christopher Scott Eaton[1] is an American college baseball coach and former player. He currently is the head coach of Sandia High School[2].

Playing career

Eaton graduated from Cibola High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was named 2006 New Mexico Class 5A First Team All-State.[3] As a senior, Eaton led Cibola to its first district championship in school history. He then played four seasons at Eastern New Mexico University.[4] In his second year with the Greyhounds, ENMU earned a berth in the Lone Star Conference Championships for the first time in school history.

Coaching career

Eaton began coaching at the University of New Mexico in 2011, serving as graduate assistant for coach Ray Birmingham. He quickly made an impact and coached four players who went on to be picked in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft (D.J. Peterson, 1st-round; Mitch Garver, 9th-round; Alex Allbritton, 21st-round; Josh Melendez, 34th-round) and one in the 2014 MLB Draft (Alex Real, 24th-round). The program won the first annual Lobo Service Award for community service during the 2011-12 school year (volunteered a total of 1,285 hours, which led all UNM athletic programs).[5]

Eaton's second assistant coaching position came at West Texas A&M University, as he helped guide the Buffalos to a record of 29-19, earning a berth in the Lone Star Conference Championships. The Buffalos ranked among the NCAA leaders in offense: 2nd in doubles per game (2.63), 4th in slugging percentage (.507), 5th in sacrifice flies (34), 7th in batting average (.336), 8th in doubles (126), and 16th in scoring (7.5). Under Eaton's watch as the Buffalos' outfield and assistant hitting coach, outfielder Justin Henderson won the LSC batting title (.407) and four hitters were named All-Region and All-LSC.

Following the 2012 season, Eaton spent two seasons as the recruiting coordinator with the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys. Eaton's stint at NMHU produced a record of 61-46 (.570), one NCAA Tournament berth (2014), and one Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Plains Division championship (2014). NMHU constructed a 52-27 (.658) record against RMAC opponents under Eaton's guidance. He coached one first-team Academic All-American, two All-Region, five All-RMAC, two RMAC All-Academic players, and the 2014 RMAC Summit Award winner for baseball. In 2014, the Cowboys ranked as one of the nation's best offensive teams in several categories: 3rd in triples (26), 4th in triples per game (.48), 7th in homeruns per game (.87), 9th in homeruns (47), 9th in slugging percentage (.492), 16th in sacrifice flies (31), 17th in on base percentage (.410), 19th in batting average (.322), 20th in walks (209), 23rd in hits (554), and 23rd in runs (374). In Eaton's first year guiding the infield and assisting with the Cowboys' offense, two infielders were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Defensive (Gold Glove) team while one signed a professional contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the 2013 season.

Eaton moved to Golden, Colorado and worked as the outfield coach at Colorado School of Mines before being hired as the inaugural assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Eaton, along with head coach Steve Jones, were the first to start the baseball program at TAMUT.[6]

Eaton then served on the Sandia Prep High School staff the next two years, the last year as head coach. During his tenure at Sandia Prep, the Sundevils won the New Mexico Class 4A state championship.[7]

Chris Eaton was named the Sandia High School head baseball coach on May 7, 2017. In his first season leading the Matadors, Sandia reached the postseason and had one player earn All-State, seven named All-District 2-6A, and eight on the Academic All-District 2-6A team.
