Chris Pasin (born January 14, 1958) is an American jazz composer and musician who plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and piccolo trumpet.

Early Years

Chris Pasin grew up in New City and West Nyack, NY, suburbs of New York City in Rockland County. As a nine year old he began learning the trumpet, studying privately with Walter Nardozzi. Later, at the newly established Clarkstown South High School, his music teachers were William Garbinsky and Doc Carney and he regularly traveled to New York City to study with the great Carmine Caruso. It was during this time when he was first exposed to jazz, regularly sitting in at the Office Restaurant in Nyack, having the opportunity to play with great musicians such as Arnie Lawrence, Chuck Loeb, and Markie Markowitz. Upon graduation he attended New England Conservatory, where he studied with Jaki Byard[1], Ran Blake, and George Russell[2].He played in Gunther Schuller’s repertory ensembles as well as played at the Village Vanguard with the George Russell New York band. After graduating with a double major in classical trumpet and jazz in 1980, he joined the Buddy Rich band, and for the next two years, he toured the US and the world as the jazz trumpet soloist. In 1982, he joined Frank Sinatra in the Dominican Republic for the televised Concert for the Americas, followed by a two week engagement at Carnegie Hall. Performances with Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, and Ray Charles also took place during this period.

1982-2007

Pasin spent the next decade in New York City. He played with the Toshiko Akiyoshi / Lew Tabackin band from 1982-1988 and can be heard on their album Wishing Peace. He continued to hone his craft, playing with a host of New York – based musicians, including Brother Jack McDuff. This culminated in Pasin recording his first CD in 1987, Detour Ahead with Steve Slagle, Benny Green, Rufus Reid, and Dannie Richmond . He was active in several major salsa bands: Johnny Rodriguez Latin Jazz Band, Victor Paz, and a Sunday night Brazilian jazz residency at Sweet Basil Jazz Club with Thiago de Mello which featured Claudio Roditi.

Family life is important to hin and he spent 1991-2007 building a successful business and raising his family.

Recent

Pasin rediscovered his passion for music in 2008, practicing, playing, composing and swiftly became ensconced in the professional music scene of the Hudson Valley. He released his previously recorded album Detour Ahead in 2008 and his CD Random Acts of Kindness, on Planet Arts Records in 2015, consisting entirely of his original compositions.

In 2017 he released Baby it’s Cold Outside, a holiday album featuring Armen Donelian, Ira Coleman, Rich Syracuse, Jeff Siegel, and Patricia Dalton Fennell, on Planet Arts Records. This album features a role reversal of the title song with Patricia Dalton Fennell, that caught the attention of major newsplapers and CNN[3], where she was interviewed.

He was a member of the late pianist Lee Shaw’s quintet. He continues to write music and has generated a range of musical projects including a popular weekly jazz series from 2015-2018 in Catskill, NY. He regularly performs with The John Esposito Sextet, Robert Kopec's big BANG Jazz Gang, the Phil Allen Concert Jazz Band, the Empire Jazz Orchestra, Keith Pray's Soul Ensemble

and is an in-demand studio trumpet player. He has played regularly with a host of artists encompassing a range of genres.
