Christian Benedict (born Dec 11, 1976 in Hamburg, Germany) is a sleep researcher from Uppsala University, Sweden.

Career

After completing his studies in nutritional science at the University of Kiel, Germany, in 2003, Benedict joined the Department of Neuroendocrinology at the University of Lübeck, Germany, headed by Prof. Jan Born, to start work as a PhD student. Benedict’s studies revealed that central nervous insulin signaling plays an important role for food intake decisions and memory formation in humans. In 2008, Benedict earned a doctoral degree in human biology and in 2009, he moved to Sweden to obtain postdoctoral training in the department of neuroscience of Uppsala University under the guidance of Prof. Helgi Schiöth, one of the most prolific researchers in the whole of Scandinivia[1]. Since then, he has pursued an impressive scientific career that has spawned a series of outstanding publications on the role of sleep for metabolic health in humans. Some of his key findings have shown that …

  • one night of sleep deprivation increases the levels of molecules that are biomarkers for brain damage ([2],
  • it may take former shift workers at least five years to fully recover their brain function [3],
  • daytime light alleviates detrimental sleep changes caused by exposure to screens of mobile devices[4],
  • one sleepless night tips energy metabolism towards storing fats at the expense of muscle tissue [5], and that
  • curtailing sleep alters the abundance of bacterial gut species that are linked to compromised metabolic health [6].

In 2013, Christian acquired his postgraduate qualification as a lecturer in neuroscience from Uppsala University. He currently works as senior researcher and heads a research group in the department of neuroscience at Uppsala University. He has published over 100 scientific research studies, and his research has been featured in numerous media outlets, including The Guardian, The Boston Globe, Scientific American, and CNN Health. Christian has received several prestigious awards for his research, including the Professor-Otto-Roth Prize for the best doctoral thesis at the University of Lübeck in 2008, Oscar Prize from the Uppsala University, Silvia-King Prize from the German Diabetes Association, Dr.Werner-Fekl Prize from the German Society for Nutritional Medicine, and Young Investigator Award from the German Sleep Society. Finally, he has obtained considerable funding as a principal investigator (e.g., from the German Research Foundation, the Swedish Research Council, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation).

Works

Benedict has written a popular-scientific book in Swedish[7], in which he summarizes the state-of-the-art of science on how sleep affects health and performance in humans.
