Cibolo Valley is an unofficial geographical region in Central Texas defined by Cibolo Creek, a tributary meandering into the San Antonio River. Geography

Cibolo Valley is mainly defined by the Cibolo Creek, but is not limited to the creek itself. It is mostly located in northeastern San Antonio and extends into the north-northwest area of San Antonio. It lies in the Texas Hill Country and is distinguished by its hilly terrain and karst topography. It lies on the Balcones Escarpment and is fed by the Edwards Aquifer. Many of the hills rise to a height of 400-500 feet above the surrounding plains and valleys, with Packsaddle Mountain rising to a height of 800 feet above the Llano River in Kingsland.[2] The Hill Country also includes the Llano Uplift and the second-largest granite dome in the United States, Enchanted Rock. The terrain throughout the region is punctuated by a thin layer of topsoil and a large number of exposed rocks and boulders, making the region very dry and prone to flash flooding. Native vegetation in the region includes various yucca, prickly pear cactus, desert spoon, and wildflowers in the Llano Uplift. The predominant trees in the region are ashe juniper and Texas live oak.[3]

Texas bluebonnets, castillejas, verbena, evening primrose, lantana, prickly pear cactus, and wild roses are some of the most prevalent, being found even thriving on the side of highways and busy roads. The area is generally filled with native wild grasses and Texas Live Oaks.

Wildlife in the are is similair to othe rareas of the Texas Hill Country. Mexican free-tailed bats, Rattlesnakes, Guadalupe Bass, White-tailed Deer, Coyotes, Red foxes, and the Texas Map Turtle primarily inhabit this area, with native insects and reptiles also being present.

A fact about Texas, but especially the Hill Country and the Cibolo Valley, is the allergies. Texas is a flat plateau, and acts like a bowl, allowing winds from Canada, Mexico, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Pacific Northwest to settle along with the native allergens to create one of the most notorious areas for allergies in the United States. The area ranks No. 22 among U.S. Metropolitan areas in terms of allergy severity.

Demographics

There are around 300,000 people in the region, but it is difficult to get accurate figures as the borders are not truly defined. The racial makeup of the Cibolo Valley is approximately 65% White, 10% African American, 1% Native American, 4% Asian, 0.5% Pacific Islander, 4.5% from other races, and 15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are approximately 50% of the population. Average individual income is approximately $60,000, whereas for a family the average sits at $150,000. Male-to female income in the area is almost the same, due to the area stressing equality throughout the whole area.

  • 65% White (Non-Hispanic Whites: 15%)
  • 10% Black (Non-Hispanic Blacks: 8%)
  • 1% Native American
  • 4% Asian (Non-Hispanic Asians: 1%)
