City Science is a research laboratory at the MIT Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The City Science group is led by Director, Kent Larson..[1]

The group researches three main topics:[2]

[3]

Changing Places -technology enabled spaces. Changing Places researchers propose and deploy solutions for livable, affordable and efficient live/work spaces. These spaces include robotic furniture, sensorized environments, and re-imagined architecture.[4]

CityScope - Digital platforms for spatial design and urban planning. CityScope researchers develop tangible digital platforms with complex data visualizations that allow users to understand spaces and urban planning interventions. CityScope platforms may include data related to mobility, energy usage, live/work spaces, density, residential spaces, and educational spaces to name a few. All metrics relate to three key indicators of an innovative urban space: density, diversity and proximity.[5]

Mobility-on-Demand - mobility researchers explore mobility solutions that will improve livability of urban residents by exploring autonomous and shared solutions. The PEV (Persuasive Electric Vehicle) is an autonomous tricycle that is lightweight and agile and can operate autonomously or as an electric assist vehicle. Mobility researchers also map mobility solutions to better understand current and future mobility concerns.

[6][7]

In addition to the three theme areas, the group also coordinates the City Science Network, a global team of researchers who collaborate with the City Science group. The City Science network includes, Andorra la Vella at the Andorra Living Lab [8] [9], Hamburg Germany at Hafencity University [10], Toronto at Ryerson University [11], Shanghai at Tongji University [12], Taipei at Taipei Tech [13], and Helsinki at Aalto University [14]

The City Science group is in the Media Arts and Sciences department, in the School of Architecture and Planning. It was formerly known as Changing Places.
