Clifford James Hodgson (born 2 September 1972), known as Cliff James, is a novelist, poet, journalist and travel writer who was born in Kent, United Kingdom.[1] In 1990, James entered a residential religious scheme for young people in Berwick, Sussex, which was run by the former Bishop of Lewes, Peter Ball.[2] James later claimed that he was physically and psychologically abused over a period of a year on this scheme by Bishop Ball.[3] James was a witness in the prosecution case which saw Ball eventually plead guilty in 2015 to charges of Indecent Assault and Misconduct in a Public Office.[4] In an interview with the BBC, James claimed that the bishop had abused his victims by citing the ascetic lifestyle of St Francis of Assisi as a justification for his acts: {{Quote|text="He [Peter Ball] prepared his victims and he chose them very cleverly - people who were vulnerable, unsure of their identities ... He was sadistic. He would beat me with a wooden clothes brush. I was bruised and would be in great pain for days."[5]}}In 2007, Cliff James became the editor of the Brighton-based LGBT newspaper one80news, and News Editor of PinkNews and 3SIXTY magazine, specialising in political, environmental and human rights features.[6] During the same year, he became the Secretary of the Gay And Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA).[7] James's first published short story, The Violence Of The Gardener, appeared in Arcadia's anthology, A Casualty Of War: The Arcadia Book of Gay Short Stories, in 2008. In 2011, James was living in Liverpool where he became involved with the Occupy movement protesting against economic austerity and corporate greed[8] His novel, Of Bodies Changed, was self-published with FeedARead in 2014.[9] The Halifax Courier described it as a "a racy novel" and a "gay Wuthering Heights".[10] Another of his short stories, The Half-Way House, was published in Speak My Language And Other Stories: An Anthology of Gay Fiction, published by Little, Brown Book Group in 2015. After the 2016 UK referendum on leaving the European Union, James left the UK as a self-professed 'Brexile' and circumnavigated the world, travelling through Europe, Israel, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Japan, Australia, South America and settling in Spain.[11] In an interview with The Independent, he said that he was writing a book about going into exile after the referendum result, with no plans to ever return to the UK: “The EU referendum result was a huge shock, like a bereavement ... Overnight, it felt like the country had returned to the Dark Ages of ignorance and hatred… I thought about staying and trying to fight this tide, but it felt overwhelming.”[11] References1. ^https://www.feedaread.com/profiles/6209/ 2. ^http://awesomegang.com/cliff-james/ 3. ^https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/22/world/europe/church-of-england-colluded-with-bishop-to-hide-sex-abuse-report-says.html 4. ^https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-34466842 5. ^https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-34458038 6. ^http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2006/12/01/my-grandpa-fought-fascism-now-the-gay-community-must/ 7. ^http://www.secularism.org.uk/bigotedbishopgetseggonhisface.html 8. ^https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/occupy-liverpool-protestors-descend-city-3362821 9. ^http://bookreadermagazine.com/featured-author-cliff-james-2/ 10. ^https://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk/news/author-unveils-racy-new-novel-1-6771244 11. ^1 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/brexit-british-citizens-leaving-migration-impact-irish-passports-latest-eu-referendum-fears-racism-a7914606.html |
