The Cocoon Music Event GmbH is an international music and event agency founded on March 7th 1996 by DJ and music producer Sven Väth together with the first Cocoon Managing Director Talida Wegener. Cocoon is a worldwide registered trademark and is subject to worldwide copyright and image protection.

Description

Since its establishment in 1996^[1], the company has planned and implemented events and club nights in more than 30 countries^[2]. Each year, Cocoon Music Event GmbH is responsible for an average of 90 events worldwide (2016). In 2016 alone, approximately 350,000 guests attended a Cocoon Music event somewhere around the world. The brand's international reputation has also received strong promotional backing as a result of the successful party series on the Balearic Island of Ibiza.

In addition to the Events department, Cocoon Music Event GmbH has been organising its own event in Leeds, England (Cocoon in the Park) since 2009. The company also organized the Green & Blue Festival around Frankfurt Obertshausen from 2004 to 2012. The Cocoon Music Event GmbH owns a record label and a music publishing company, as well as a merchandising business and a well-known artist agency. The artist agency was renamed Flash Artist Booking in 2014.

Cocoon Music Event GmbH is currently located in Frankfurt am Main, with Tanja Rohe as Head of Operations since 2014.

The vision of the Cocoon

After the closure of the legendary Omen techno club in Frankfurt, Sven Väth developed Cocoon as a new way to present his unique vision of techno music. According to his ideas, party guests should play a major part at each event, with the DJ, the dancers, music, light and sound installation morphing into one dynamic experience. What’s more, the Cocoon concept represents the metamorphosis that Väth has undergone since the closure of the Omen - which has remained a bastion of techno culture - gradually evolving into something new and beautiful. Cocoon as a content-oriented idea does not stand for a defined basic concept encapsulating all its business areas, rather for a continuously developing idea concerned with atmosphere and art (spirit in progress)^[3]. The concept of this artistic and musical metamorphosis was perfectly implemented and designed with the opening of the Cocoon (Club) in Frankfurt in 2004^[4].

This ongoing development was and still is a crucial part of the Cocoon Ibiza series^[5], which reinvents itself year after year. Cocoon Music Event GmbH also transfers the core content of the Cocoon concept to all worldwide Cocoon events, as well as the design and performance of the Cocoon showcases to partner festivals (e.g. Tomorrowland in Belgium, Creamfields in South America, [https://www.wearefstvl.com/ We are Festival] in England and [https://www.awakenings.com/nl/en/ Awakenings] in the Netherlands, etc.).

In the beginning

The first Cocoon event took place on 30.04.1996 in Frankfurt am Main in the Alte Brauerei, off the Hanauer Landstraße. Artists at this first Cocoon event included Underworld, Sven Väth, Alter Ego and DJ Hell. Sven Väth developed the concept of club-in-club parties together with Talida Wegener and after the Omen’s closing in 1998, Sven Väth developed a monthly series of events in the U60311 disco in Frankfurt. At the same time, the Cocoon Booking Agency was established and from 2000, the Cocoon Recordings music label was founded. Sven Väth, Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Alter Ego, Josh Wink, Dubfire, Ricardo Villalobos, Der Dritte Raum and Extrawelt to name a few, were the agency’s main artists in the early years. In addition to internationally successful and established artists, the agency’s concept also focused on introducing young artists and talents.

Cocoon Ibiza

In 1999 the Cocoon Music Event GmbH began an independent series of events on the Balearic island of Ibiza at the internationally renowned disco "Amnesia" - a club with about 500,000 visitors each year^[6].

Cocoon also introduced a club-in-club concept with its own decorative elements, individual light and video effects, professional dancers and performance artists. Also, Cocoon was the first event series on the island to exclusively featured techno, a direct contrast to the more commercially oriented sound at most other events around that time. Cocoon Ibiza parties have always presented a line-up of well-known artists combined with newcomers and artists from the Cocoon pool. The Cocoon Ibiza series is always held on Monday during the summer months. In 2009 an additional event took place on a Friday (Party like it's 1989) with the cult UK techno group Underworld contributing a live performance. In 2016 about 80,000 guests attended Cocoon’s Ibiza events. Well-known artists who took part include Ricardo Villalobos, Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Adam Beyer, Carl Craig and of course Sven Väth.

Since 2011 Cocoon events have also been taking place on the neighboring island of Formentera. The events take place on Thursday nights at the Tipic discotheque^[7].

Each year in addition to the Cocoon Ibiza events, a seasonal retrospective also takes place. The sound of this series is devoted to the music of the previous Cocoon Ibiza events. As a result, The Sound Of The (...) Season is one of the longest running techno-compilation series in Germany and the releases always reach high positions in the German sales charts. For the second and third edition of the compilation series, Richie Hawtin contributed a mix. Since 2006, a further double mix CD has also been released before each Ibiza season, which gives a preview of the musical highlights of the upcoming events. Among other names, artists like Andre Galluzzi, Raresh, Reboot, Dubfire, Loco Dice, Marco Carola, Adam Beyer and Carl Craig have contributed mixes to this series^[8].

Own events in Germany

In addition to the Cocoon Ibiza series and the worldwide Club-in-Club events, Cocoon Music Event GmbH also organized its own Green & Blue festival in various locations in the Frankfurt / Offenbach region in September 2008 onwards. After the first years at the Waldschwimmbad Obertshausen^[9], the organization moved to a former army barracks. Another Green & Blue event took place at the Langener Waldsee.

Own events in England

Under the direction of the Cocoon Music Event GmbH and in cooperation with Shane Graham (Mint Club Leeds), the annual Open Air Festival Cocoon In the Park has been taking place on the second weekend of July since 2009^[10].

Cocoon Recordings

Under the label code LC11279, the Cocoon Recordings music label has been running since 2000 alongside a sister publishing company^[11]. The first catalogue number was the label compilation "A", which moves on annually and has now reached the letter "Q" (as of 2017). In addition to maxi singles and albums, Cocoon Recordings also features the annual The Sound Of The Season CD^[12].
