词条 Draft:College Debt
释义

OVERVIEW

An ongoing issue not only in Massachusetts but in the entire US is college debt. Many young adults have to face the decision of whether or not they want to further their education. Along this decision they are planning for ways to pay for college and thinking about if the debt they will have to pay back is worth the hassle. As these young adults want to pursue their dreams, college is a huge milestone for many so sometimes not going will shun them away from their passions. Students spend a lot of time writing and applying for scholarships but that never seems to be enough. College graduates end up having better interpersonal skills and live longer but still have to deal with the stress of paying back all their student loans. This delays from saving money for things like houses, cars, marriage and retirement. However not every successful person graduated from college, and with debt now in the trillions we may see less and less students enrolling in higher education. Students who do end up graduating with excessive debt end up working much more than they want just to be able to pay it all back. Higher education should not be so expensive because students are willing to invest a lot of time in search of their dream goals that require college degrees.

HISTORY

The first college ever funded by colonist was called “New College” now known as Harvard University. Shortly after Harvard came Yale and Brown University as well as many others. In the early 1970’s Pell grants were made and helped people pay for college. Right after Pell Grants came financial aid to help those in need with paying for tuition. As 1990’s approached college curriculum became more specific to certain areas of studies and started to begin funding community colleges. This is where new majors began to arise and two year universities were developing. When 2000 came around we seen a dramatic increase in those attending college. Workforce started to require college degrees in many different fields. At this point high school was not enough. People were not earning enough money just with a highschool diploma. As more universities were being made and more students attending college, debt began to rise. People had to take out loans to finance their education. When they graduated they were left with large amounts of debt to pay back.

GOVERNMENT

According to Mark Kantrowitz, “Student loan debt is increasing because government grants and support for postsecondary education have failed to keep pace with increases in college costs.” Free money known as Pell grants are starting to get cut down. The government will not make public college free as much as we want it to be. The government has a lot of power if you do not pay back your loans they can take your taxes, disability, and social security money. They also have the ability to sue borrowers, if needed. Loan forgiveness is when they cancel all or part of your loans and you do not have to pay for them anymore. It’s not something given to everyone and there are specific eligibility requirements for each situation. Some ways the government helps forgive loans are by: teacher loan forgiveness, public service loan forgiveness, military, and more. The government is in control of a lot of the education system and how it runs. They also deal with people financing their education and lending money for those in need. There is not a lot of free out there so people are suffering from massive amounts of college debt after graduating from higher education.
