He composed many pieces in a traditional Egyptian folk style. His works include solo pieces and film scores, and in 1931 he began composing sentimental and patriotic songs for Umm Kulthum, beginning in 1931. He also began writing operettas in 1924, eventually producing a total of 56 operettas and 1,070 songs.[2] His father was Egyptian and his mother was Turkish,[2] and it was they who instilled in him his love of music, by singing him Arabic and Turkish songs when he was young.[2] References1. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.aljazeera.net/encyclopedia/icons/2015/3/11/%D8%B2%D9%83%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A7-%D8%A3%D8%AD%D9%85%D8%AF|title=زكريا أحمد|access-date=2018-12-02}} 2. ^1 2 3 {{citation|last=Goldschmidt|first=Arthur|year=2000|chapter=Ahmad, Zakariyya|title=Biographical Dictionary of Modern Egypt|publisher=Lynne Rienner Publishers|isbn=1-55587-229-8|page=17|quote=Singer and composer.
